SOL 3 / Scottish Spring Classic Race at Falkland.

Terrible through the first 4 controls. I always try and play to my strengths and run round when given the chance, but I tried to go straight on 1 - 2 and 3 - 4, but my breathing was terrible again and I was struggling big time in the very rough terrain. Baled out to the track half way through both legs but would have been much faster if I'd gone round from the start of both legs.

Then there was the epic long leg between 4 - 5! I chose to go to the left for a number of reasons -

I can move fairly well on tracks and paths.
I didn't want Dixie (who started 2 minutes behind me) seeing me on the moor if I went that way, although It turned out he also went to the left.
I thought the easterly head-wind would be a factor on the right hand option across the moor.

Great leg which provoked much discussion afterwards. I was worried all the way along it that I had made a terrible mistake, especially when we dropped a few more contours than expected just before the long slog up the hill towards No 5.

Pleased enough with my run but wish I could breath properly again. Beaten by Dave Weir who's a classy hill runner - he took 2 minutes out of me on the long leg where I assume he went to the right across the moor.

Easy week beckons before the JK.

Scottish Spring Middle Distance Race at Tentsmuir. Breathing terrible and struggled round shedding time on virtually every control, especially No 5 where I missed the control in the green. Lots of small misses in the circle. Didn't make much sense of the map in some of the detailed areas. Well off the pace and one to forget.

Scottish Spring Sprint Race at Falkland. Enjoyed running in the palace, but the first 14 controls were a shock to the system and I was way off the pace until we got to 21 - 22 when I could actually get running instead of the stop start through the controls which were coming up fast and furious and make up some places.

Generally okayish except I made a mess of No 1 along with a lot of others, probably lost 30 secs.

Was very hesitant between 15 and 16 when the track seemed to go through a private garden with an irate local standing there so I ground to a halt to check all was well. However the track was in bounds and the local didn't say anything when I ran past.

Beaten by one of the usual suspects and two visitors from down south.

Lunchtime recovery run from work up to the Lomondgate SUDs Pond, a couple of laps and back. Feeling a bit better today.

Track session with the athletic club at Linwood track. Session was 5 x 1,000m (200m easy jog recovery in 2mins). Felt dreadful - no energy, sair heid, sair legs and breathing terrible so did the first 600m of the first 3 reps and dropped out. A session to forget.

Don't believe the start list for SOL 3! Two main rivals in the Blue Course starting 2 and 4 minutes behind me. Don't organisers check the start lists after the computer churns them out? Had the same 2 weeks ago at both events.

Pleasant run round the Chase the Sunset with Gordon. Felt rubbish all day and breathing not great with lots of gunge still in my throat.

Suffering today - legs really sore and heavy and breathing terrible with lots of coughing so just took this very easy.

Ran (slowly!) round Balloch Castle Country Park and Drumkinnon Wood checking the map and control sites for the evening event I'm planning later in the month. Lovely evening for it.

Intervals with the athletic club on the trails on Linwood Moss.

Session was 1 min (30secs) + 2mins (1min) + 3mins (90secs) + 4mins (2mins) + 5mins (2mins) + 5mins (2mins) + 4mins (2mins) + 3mins (90secs) + 2mins (1min) + 1min.

Throat not sore anymore but sill some gunge coming from it and still not quite 100% so only did the first 2/3 of the session.
