Peak District Challenge 2020.
First place.
14:39.
3:39 quicker than last year.

Waited at registration until the last minute to set off. Eventually started at 9:06, 1.5 mins behind the two people (Natalie Taylor #109 and Shawn Mills #106) who I had googled were the quickest in the field. Passed them on the way out of Hathersage as they had already gone wrong. Watched them bear-off towards Higger Tor as I stuck to the shortest route. All across Stanage Edge I was constantly passing the earlier starters nearly all of whom were walkers anyway. Passed my first runner (apart from the one that was on the OOB lower path) as we crossed road and then four more at the Moscar CP (topped up my water here). Didn't see anyone else then until Derwent Dam where I passed two more runners. Is it all uphill to Howden dam from Derwent dam? Kept up a run all the way. Ate 2 x choc bars and 1 x cereal bar.
Howden CP had food so: 2 x biscuits, 2 x bhajis and more water. CP staff said there were three ahead of me (all on 75km course, although I didn't know that).
The climb up to Alport Towers was steep, but not so bad as last year. No one in sight over Alport Towers until near the river where I passed one more runner. Looking back up the hill could see some lights coming down.
Across Snake Road (topped up water) and tried to check the tracker feed for the first time. No service.
As I walked up the drag towards Edale (sausage roll) saw two lights quickly approaching behind me. #109 and #106 jogged past. Exchanged a few words and started jogging along as well.
For the next few miles over into Edale and up to Upper Booth the pattern was they would run quicker than me, stop at the path junctions, check their map, I would catch up and take the correct turn and then they would agree it was the right way and slowly overtake me again.
After Upper Booth my stomach started to feel rough (Sausage roll eaten after Upper Booth). Up Jacob's Ladder (jacket on) they got a good lead as I wilted.
Approaching Edale Cross...what are those two lights doing going up on to Kinder? I stuck to the correct path over the saddle making myself as dark as possible and gleefully ran down to the Bowden Bridge CP.
Top up of water and a rummage in my bag.
3 mins after leaving the CP passed #109 and #106 running down to the CP. That was the last I saw of them.
Over to Rushup Edge and Lord's Seat there was a lot of walking as the drags were just slightly too steep to run. Two stops to sit down on the bank for 30seconds on this section. Ate fudge and a wrap. No lights appeared behind me, which was good. Cold, strong wind meant my jacket was on (windproof over the top of my rucsac).
Mam Nick CP was nailed then over to Castleton via Blue John Cavern and road (jacket off). Managed to check the tracker here and rivals were 20 mins or so back.
Castleton CP had food so topped up on water and ate a banana. It was now light enough to dispense with the headtorch so another rummage in the pack. A few of the 75km runners were here as well, but managed to get a seat.
Cave Dale was long and tough going, but another check of the tracker showed my rivals were taking the longer way down to Castleton giving me 30 min lead.
Ran lots of the next section to Hay Dale with only short walking breaks. Over the road to Tideswell walked too much and had to have a word with myself. One bite of a mars bar only, but drinking plenty of water (flavoured with ribena).
Small nav brain-fart in Tidewell as I got it confused with Stoney Middleton, 1 min lost. Good run down through the valley and up and over to Cressbrook CP (drog bag).
Ate a donut and half a can of coke. Emptied my sac of waste and extras (headtorch, windproof, old maps and bum bag) and changed shirt (still long-sleeved). Made sure I still had all mandatory kit and set off with about a 25 min lead (lots of tracker checking from here to Froggatt as I had a signal).
Running well over White Rake and on to Froggatt Bridge. Still drinking water. Tracker showed the gap behind was not closing 23-25 mins.
Tim was at CP at Froggatt Bridge with a Muller rice (down in three spoonfuls) and some coke. Short chat and off up to Froggatt Edge.
Not looking behind now. Trying to keep up a good pace to break 15 hours.
Small nav error in woods below Hay car park, but quick check of map and no panic.
Through Padley Gorge and hit the stile in the wall corner perfect. Surprise view was a drag, then it was all downhill to the finish. Lots of checking of the pace/watch across here. Still drinking, but mouth remained dry.

Nearly went wrong in Hathersage, but quickly corrected.

My schedule was for 16:30, so really pleased to get 14:39.
Kit all worked well. I could definitely get away without the bumbag. Large windproof over the rucsac was a success as I put it on and took it off when needed and not later than needed.
Cool.
