Orienteering 1:05:20 [4] 8.5 km (7:41 / km) +157m 7:02 / km
(injured) shoes: Inov-8 Mudclaw 265 Blue

Decided, post-interland reserve (note: only second reserve, so I'm not going) selection email, to actually go out & do some orienteering "training". Not the best idea, but not the worst either.

Tried to run the Leigh woods 7th January Brown course, manually marking up my Blue map with the Brown CPs, and using a yellow highlighter. This wasn't a success. So i failed to complete the course.

ONLY READ THE BELOW IF YOU ARE A LEIGH WOODS GEEK / DID THE BROWN 2 WEEKS AGO - a subset of one, probably (Mark3)

all my splits are slow, but that's OK, i wasn't racing. I felt fitter than 2 weeks ago, by miles, but some hip & hamstring pain was a constant annoyance. BUT I think i'm on the mend (ish) slowly.

no 1 - see later - something's wrong.
no 5 - this part of the area is a total bizarre mystery to me, every time. I am sure i didn't find the site. There are new paths, going in impossible directions, and nothing makes sense. pressed on
no 6 - fluffed it - wrong place on track - due to not finding no 5 i reckon.

then it all went wrong as my yellow highlighter lines crossed and i did nos 25 & 26 before going to no 9. Oh well!

no 16 - took the "Burley" route for a change - it was not the best, but not too awful. (3:01 vs Mark 2:45)

no 1 - the map is clearly wrong here. I may need to fiddle with QuickRoute. Having come in from all directions, i can confirm that anyone coming in from the south / bike track, would have found it fine & not thought the map was remiss. TBC. (or does anyone care? I do - the map is v misleading there). https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1539054...

Buttock, hip & hamstring none the worse (much) for yesterday's little burn up. Good! (I think).

Fab walk in Quantocks with climbing buddy Lynne.

13km, 332m climb; great views.

I'm sure my memory is shot but where we parked seemed familiar - could it have been where the start was for BUSF 1985? (Mark S may know - he started his long career in organising O events right there, right then!)

Orienteering race 41:27 [4] 5.4 km (7:41 / km) +112m 6:57 / km
(injured) shoes: Inov-8 Mudclaw 265 Blue

Pain in hip less this morning, proving what a lottery it is. Hamstring pain minimal, which is a big plus. But still - hip pain.

Helping at BOK event (Dolebury Warren Saturday Series), so thought i'd jog the Green. V early start (2nd out on course). lovely day, sun, frost, -1.5 degrees

Missed no 1 by 2 mins (lazy & not used to 1:7500 scale), and Paul started 2 mins behind. This was 100% not what I'd wanted. Couldn't he have waited another few minutes before starting?

Took myself out of the equation (or thought I had) at no 8 by going to no 19 nearby - the "1" of the "19" almost overlaying the North grid line. Paul helpfully didn't bother telling me, and I lost 2 mins here, finding no 19 with Tommi who had come from no 18 not no 8.

Drifted along , aware of mild hip pain . Inevitably re-caught Paul and overtook with a good contour in to no 20; but sadly the "wall" near no 21 wasn't clear & I ended up on the wrong crag, 100% thought it was right; ready to shout "this leg will be voided!!". Again, Paul helpfully didn't tell me he'd found the control (note: team player award 2017 won't be going to him!)

Pleased with no pain, but with 5-6mins+ lost, I'm about as far away from my best as possible! Had i started late (as planned) & not missed no 1, I could have done 36 mins with ease. Felt lots fitter than Leigh woods, which was horrible / felt like death.

But it was only supposed to be an easy jog from a runner on the ropes.
Recovered very quickly indeed.

splits are mildly entertaining. just goes to show how fast you can go when some1 is in your line of sight. (post no 21). Tho i was leading Paul to no's 4 & 5..... My no 9 was a debacle as was my no 1. http://splitsbrowser.org.uk/splitsgraph.php?eventI...

Following my Interland email, I'd better start taking this sort of thing more seriously?

Woke with excruciating pain in LH buttock. Oh FFS - why now?????

Massive self-destroying session at TCA with Liz (injured) & Fenella. Ignored pain & just climbed til pain in fingers overtook that of buttock.

Really bashed it this time. 3 black probs, & many more. I'm claiming a UK 6a move, or two; and scores of top end 5c moves. Really promising & miles better than last friday's debacle. Super psyched for outdoor climbing season.

went back after tea break and found it was torture. but still banged out a load of yellows (UK 5b).

I guess I'm frustrated.

Easy nav tutoring to Angela (Portishead RC), who had bought a shit compass "Karrimor!" for < £10 (now £4.25 - there should be a law against this!!! it's a pile of shite! the needle was all over the place! http://www.sportsdirect.com/karrimor-compass-78500...

Ashton court, in mist, rough compass work & rough nav. Very slow & easy. She then ran 8km in 33:12 that evening in a road race. God.
