Orienteering race 31:44 [5] 3.38 km (9:23 / km) +64m 8:35 / km
shoes: VJ Integrators

Oo Cup day5, soriška planina again, 2.4k, sprint, 1:5000 map, within reach of silver , safe in 3rd. Rain! All night. Utterly wet & miserable.

Fucking hell. Where to even start.

I’ve camped within 120m of my no 1 all week. Within 2 mins of starting I was LOST. Found 4 other controls before mine. A 150m/2 min max leg took me 5:21. At one point I was stood still, saying “I don’t know what to do!!!” I’d overshot badly (1:5000 is not good in forest) & went straight to my no 2- if only that had been the worst of it!!!!

Belted round , but no 9 horrific!!!! No idea! Louise on ultimate took under 2 mins. Me: 4:23. Just could barely walk let alone run across the rough ( there was an elephant track she said; I missed it). When I finally got to the circle, I was clueless- no idea!!!!! Oh dear....

And on to finish, nailing many legs, super fun: safe in 3rd/podium. Disgracefully far down today. What have I learned? That remains to be seen.

It’s been a great week with extremes of heat, results, happiness & disappointment; some great memories & nice to be 3rd as 2nd would have just been irritating. Major kudos to ALL who ran the Ultimate though- never!!!!! Not for me ! :-)

I won SEVEN splits out of 22 controls. This has to stop. SLOW DOWN. http://orienteeringonline.net/SplitTimes.aspx?Comp...

Oo cup day 4- local to tent. V v busy map (3.8k, 22 controls) was finally my undoing. Went from 6 to 8 (a long leg). 8mins lost. Carried on anyway, it was all good generally, with a smattering of luck. Some tough bouldery bits, but fun.

Some others had nightmares/Dq, so ridiculously I’m still on podium, & only 5:39 down. Can’t see any hope of winning now- oh well.

Orienteering race 38:42 [5] 5.35 km (7:14 / km) +115m 6:32 / km
shoes: Innov8 MudClaw 300 2019

Oo cup stage 3, down the valley, Zaloški stol, 4.3k /125m

Desperately hot-33degrees, so the same as Dolomites sprint. Luckily in trees but didn’t seem to help much.

Set off taking safe fast path routes on the fab runnable depression strewn area. As confidence increasd, started to cut corners. Nearly came unstuck at no 8. Where I was sure it was right depression- it was- but no flag visible- hesitates- 20secs+?

Thence on dreading the rocky bit below the cliffs. Small error at 11 then cautiously thru the rocks, taking paths a lot, 1:7500 meant ok to read detail. Long steep slog out of rocks back to runnable plateau, where I found I didn’t want to run anymore. (Kim had the same reaction). Had a word with myself & “turned into Clive” for the last, fast “Clive” section. Utterly gasping & soooooo hot.

Won the stage & now up to 2nd overall. Some of my rivals had very poor runs- 47mins. To my sub-39. Yay!

Desperately hot & had to lie down; cooling off was tricky.... lovely afternoon in Bled/swam in lake, with the SBOC lot & Mark & Alice. Enjoyed walking Chester. (or was he walking me....?)

Oo cup day 2, long, v v tough area ,plugged away with few errors except path disaster after no 7, cost me the win.

Health seems normal again (13 days since the error!); massive relief. Even coping with the heat ok . V glad I’m “acting my age” unlike others!

Up to 4th now from 8th yesterday. 2nd today. All quite close tho.

OO Cup day 1, 3.6km haha!

Left (reluctantly) the paradise of Kranjska Gora & went to this ski place well above Bohinj. Very , very hot- got to 33 later. Due to health, & Kim advice/directive, plan was to walk & jog. No 1 I walked & jogged to within 20m of my control, when a really annoying woman accosted me just as I stopped to try to fine navigate. “Where’s my control? No 111. Show me on map!!!!!”

Oh ffs.

“Now you show me on my map, where are we?”

Ok. But I’m only walking/jogging, but that’s enough? I went down hill, woman on my case. Control . Guess what.

It’s hers not mine. Oh FFS!!!!!!!

Back up hill . There’s mine. Near where she accosted me. 4 mins binned; 9:32 to no 1; like dolomites stage 2. I actually nearly quit there & then.

Bumbled along, walk/jog/crazy unrunnable; so hot; some legs were fab!!!! Really nailing the nav at my snail like pace. Sadly, near end, after spiking 4 controls & feeling smug (if hot), all paths made no sense. Evie had the same issue here. 6;42 on a 4 min leg. Argh.

Felt rough/had a funny turn an hour after finishing- just so hot! Rest of day trying to find a place to camp & ended up back at arena! Too tired to care. Beer & long stage tomorrow. What can POSSIBLY go wrong? :-))

(sick)

Slept well in apartment on sofa. Woke feeling clear in head. Stunning day- hot- 28 degrees- luckily Kim had found a shaded crag to take Ella for some real outdoor rock climbing.

A good day, 5 routes, grades total sandbags. Eg. 5a felt like hvs 5a, & the one 5b we did was solid 6a/6a+. Ella seconded EVERYTHING clean. She then led her 1st route! She’s 10. & about half my height......OK.......Kim completed the “Tim Tett challenge” of following me up everything (*just about!)

Brain remained clear of fog all day. Visited the lake up the valley (from Kranjska Gora) after dinner- stunning- this place is awesome. I have to come back when I’m more robust. What took me so long to come here in the first place?

Note
(sick) (rest day)

Travel to Slovenia, to the Baxters apartment in Kranjska Gora. So good to join them!

But sadly my brain fog is back, this is major payback for yesterday. Unless I improve overnight, OO Cup is going to be a walk-retire job for me.

This is a very high price to pay for a single mistake 10 days ago. A v difficult day; mentally getting hit hard by my continuing woes- which isn’t surprising. :-(
