Sunday May 18

Note
(injured) (rest day)
Rest day after Cycle for Independence Benefit Ride. Time to let the ribs heal a bit.

Saturday May 17

Road Bike - Various 3:54:15 [3]67.12 mi (3:29 / mi) +511m 2:07 / km
(injured) shoes: Pearl izumi Vagabond #1
Cycle for Independence Metric Century Benefit Ride
W/ Merrill, No Pack
Ok, this isn't the smartest thing I've done - but we'll see how I feel tomorrow.

The plan was to just ride easy and only go as far as I could without pain. We wanted to go check it out and ride some anyway since we already paid for the ride. My last couple of test rides were ok, so I was willing to try it for as far as I could (plus it was supposed to be Merrill's longest ride).

I tried a rib wrap last night and that gave me the extra support I needed to relieve the pain a lot, so I thought I'd try it for the ride.

Once we got going on the ride and I got settled in, it was great. The weather was nice: the sun was out, there was no wind, and the temperature was very comfortable. Merrill and I got a really good pace early on with me on her wheel (21+ mph).

After the first hour, I was feeling fantastic. My legs felt great. As long as I kept my torso straight, I was virtually pain free. I ended up pulling her on my wheel for the rest of the ride after about mile 20. Merrill slowed down and tired out for the last 15 miles (down to 15-16 mph). We ended up averaging 17.2 mph for the ride, which great for both her fitness and my injury considering how bad I felt two days ago.

It ended up being a great day: Merrill's longest ride, fabulous mountain views, and I managed the ride well without straining myself or aggravating my injury. I certainly won't be doing this everyday since I know I was pushing my luck, but it worked out for today.

Friday May 16

Road Bike - Flat 50:32 [2]10.2 mi (4:57 / mi) +10m 3:04 / km
(injured) shoes: Pearl izumi Vagabond #1
Home - Hill Rd. - 13th St. - 16th St. - Pleasanton - Greenbelt - West to Willow Park - Tamarack - Catulpa - Home
Solo, No Pack
Another test ride after the crash. No extra rib pain from yesterday's ride. The leg bruise does not effect my riding and I don't feel much pain as long as I support myself. I think I can still ride the road bike as long as I am very careful.

Thursday May 15

Road Bike - Flat 47:15 [2]10.04 mi (4:41 / mi) +15m 2:55 / km
(injured) shoes: Pearl izumi Vagabond #1
Home - Greenbelt - West to Glenwood - North to Hill Rd - back home via Collister.

Normally my sprint loop, I took a very easy ride (11-12 mph) with Merrill.
I just had to see if I was going to be able to do any exercise over the the next few weeks while I was recovering from my rib injury.

I really don't feel much pain at all as long as I:
1.) Don't push it (i.e. breath too hard)
2.) Avoid bumps or brace and stand on my pedals when crossing the bumps
I need to be really careful not to over do it.
Now let's just see how I feel tomorrow morning.....

Wednesday May 14

Note
(injured) (rest day)
Resting the day after my crash, my ribs hurt especially when I breath. The leg hurts, but not as bad.

Tuesday May 13

Mtn Bike - Trail Ride 2:18:28 [4]17.57 mi (7:53 / mi) +876m 4:14 / km
(injured) shoes: Pearl izumi Vagabond #1
Fort Bose - Tr 5 - Tr 4 - Tr 6 - 3 Bears - Rocky Canyon - Mike's House.
W Mike K, Pack, K2 ZED Hardtail
Another big elevation climb until "THE BIG CRASH".
Everything was going fine, I climbed most of Devil's Slide and felt great on the climb, we made it from the dog park to the top of the hill in 1:25, but somewhere on the downhill between Tr. 6 and 3 Bears, I ripped a tire and went flying off the bike.

Overall, I'm surprised that I didn't get hurt worse considering that I was going pretty fast. I was able to ride out to Mike' house (but the right leg really hurt).

The general inventory shows I cracked some rips (extent not known yet), bruised my right quad, scraped my right elbow (yep, the one with the 10 stitches just removed), general road rash on my right side and hip, and cut up the tip of my right index finger bad (missing a chunk). FYI: Always wear full length gloves if possible.

I think I can deal with all the cuts & scrapes, even the bruise on my quad, but the ribs are going to hurt for quite awhile.

C • Glad you're OK 1

Monday May 12

Trek - Trail & Bushwhack 48:09 [3]3.81 mi (12:38 / mi) +296m 6:20 / km
shoes: Pearl izumi Seek 2
Bob's Peak: Start at Bob's Peak and trek up to top of Bob's Peak and then cut across to Corals trail (steep terrain route). Return via Corals and Bob's trails.
W/ Oakley, Pack
Ran on trail parts and hiked up steep hill off trail parts. Very windy (20+ mph). I felt really good considering my long ride yesterday. This should be a rest day, but I couldn't stay home.
