Orienteering 3:33:04 [3] 7.5 mi (28:25 / mi)
shoes: MPMW15:w

Patapsco-Avalon
Blue: 24 controls, 9.8 km, 340 m

Actual Distance Traveled: 12.1 km
Actual Climb: 403 m

Unfortunately my Garmin froze up on me once again, after I got home. Because two of the buttons are no longer functioning I can no longer restart it manually. I have to wait until the battery runs out before I can restart the thing. From what I recall my actual distance traveled was about 7.4 miles, I'm not sure what the actual climb was.

It will probably more than a week, maybe two before the battery runs down and I can access the data.

Update [1/22/16]: Garmin ran out of juice five days after it froze up. I was able to retrieve the data from it and added it above.

...

It was cold. I was expecting it to be cold. I was expecting some snow flurries but I wasn't expecting it to come down quite as much as it did or last as long as it did. It seemed to snow from 1130-1400, in other words most of the time I spent in the woods. At first it wasn't too big a problem but over time I'm pretty sure it slowed me down a bit. It got on my glasses. It was made rocks and other smooth surfaces slippery. It also impaired my ability to see things at a distance because quite a bit of what I was seeing was the same color.

I was wearing two buffs, one on my head and another around my neck. If it wasn't for the snow I think I probably would have taken off at least one of the buffs within the first hour instead of wearing both of them for the entire time I was in the woods.

I got a little bit of help finding the 1/101. I was close to it but a little off course when I saw Mike S. run past me headed in the direction of 2/102. I wasn't positive he was also doing the blue course but he usually does so I headed back in the direction he came from and found it fairly quickly.

I don't recall anything too special about the next 3 controls. I found them all without any trouble or as much help as I got on the first one.

I crossed the north-south creek between 4 and 5 further south than I should have. At the time I was probably just a bit north of 22/125 although I didn't look for it or see it. I went through the dark green path before hitting the trail. I wasn't sure where I hit the trail. Hoping that I hit it in the right spot I crossed the trail and unsuccessfully looked for 5/105 for a few minutes. I eventually returned to the trail and using the compass and the map got a better idea of where I was exactly on the trail. My second attempt at leaving the trail and searching for 5/105 was successful.

6/106 was easy to find. 7/107 was well hidden but I got some help from another person who was ahead of me and also looking for it. 8/108 was also well hidden but I saw the same person who had led me to the previous control leaving this one about the same time I got in the area. There was a steep descent, followed by a steep ascent which made it a little more challenging than the previous control.

9/109 was easy to find. I took trails most of the way there. I started on the trail heading towards 10/110 but quickly abandoned it, turned west, and cut cross country down a steep hillside to a stream and then climbed up on another steep hillside to the top of the next hill. I then angled west-northwest until I found the control.

I headed more southwest than I meant to when heading towards 11/111 and hit the NW/SE trail further south than I wanted to. I figured that at that point the control was due west of me so I started heading that way instead of continuing SW. Just before I got to the control I encountered another person who was also looking for it. He got to it just before I did. I like to think that I was headed right towards it before I encountered him, although it was well hidden considering the direction I was coming from.

12/112 and 13/113 were fairly easy to find. 14/115 proved to be a little more challenging. I encountered someone else who was doing the blue course and was lost when I was about 2/3 of the way to the control. I didn't ask him which control he was looking for but I showed him where we were on the map. I was fairly confident based on the fact that I had crossed a creek very recently. After leaving him I decided to test my belief and went down the next re-entrant in search of 16/117, which I found fairly quickly. After that I turned SE and headed up hill and across a re-entrant before getting to 14/115. It helped that Craig S. got there at the same time as me.

Craig and I got to 15/116 about the same time. I was moving a little faster but I overshot by a little bit and had to double back. 16/117 was easy to find because I had already found it before.

Craig caught up to me once again when I was looking for 17/118. I must have veered a bit SW when I was heading towards it because I ended up having to turn east once I got to the creek before reaching the control.

18/119 and 19/120 weren't difficult to find although the trek to the latter was a bit longer. I cut more or less due south most of the way to 20/121. I counted the re-entrants as I cut through the green shaded area and turned west once I thought I had reached the correct one. My guess proved to be spot on.

I overshot 21/133 by a little bit and may have crossed into private property. It wasn't until I saw the road to the south and houses to the east that I put two and two together and figured out that the fence post I had passed was all that was left of the fence on the map.

I didn't have any trouble finding the last three controls or getting back to the finish box.

The snow got on my boots and soaked through them. By the time I finished the blue course my feet were cold, wet, and somewhat numb. My fingers suffered the same fate despite the fact that I was wearing my red QOC gloves.

I rested for about 5 minutes before heading back out for control pickup.

Control Pickup

8 controls, 2.7 km

Actual Distance Traveled: 3.9 km
Actual Climb: 148 m

Moving/Stopped Time: 59:28 / 18:27
Moving Pace: 2.4 mph

131 - 141 - 132 - 105 - 123 - 102 - 101 - 124

5 of these controls were part of the blue course but I was approaching them from a different direction than I was before.

My feet were soaking wet and freezing cold but I didn't want to change until I was done so I endured. A bigger problem was my fingers which were cold and numb. It is much more difficult to untie the control boxes and flags from trees with numb fingers than it is with fully functional digits. The one plus was that snow had stopped falling before I left to pick up controls.

The first control I picked up should have been 141 but I walked right past it to 131. When I couldn't spot 141 from 131 I walked back down the trail and saw it. The third control (132) I grabbed was also on a trail. After that it was all controls that I had been to earlier in the day.

I still managed to goof when heading from 123 to 102. After crossing the north-south trail between the two controls I turned south when I should have continued east. When I got to trail that should not have been there, if I had stayed on course, I checked my compass and the map and headed in a different direction which got me to the control fairly quickly.

The distance from 101 to 124 wasn't very great but there was a fairly steep descent and ascent between them.

Although it took me over an hour to get all these controls I'm sure I lost a fair amount of time because my hands weren't functioning optimally. Once I have the Garmin data I can see how much time I actually spent moving versus standing still.

[Edited (1/22/16): My Garmin is now functioning again and I have added the data I was able to retrieve from it above, including the breakdown between stopped and moving time.]

As it was a little warmer during control pickup it was also muddier. The bottom half of my pants were pretty dirty. One more reason to not change my footwear prior to going out for control pickup.

My feet were still frozen after I got dropped off the controls and changed my clothes. It took a good hour before my feet started to feel normal again. My fingers warmed up a little more quickly than that.
