2016 Beer Chase - Loop 1
4 controls, 2.2 km, 60 m

Actual Distance Traveled: 3.4 km
Actual Climb: 42 m

The only problem I experienced on this section of the loop course was when I was headed from the 101 to the 102. I started by heading in the right direction, northeast, but then at some point I turned northwest. I'm not sure what I was thinking. The red arrow on my compass was pointed northeast which means that I was headed northwest. I should have known better.

The other controls were relatively easy to find even if I did have to do a bit of scrambling up and down to get to them. This loop was more physically than navigationally challenging and was a good way to start the chase.

2016 Beer Chase - Loop 2
5 controls, 2.7 km, 50 m

Actual Distance Traveled: 3.4 km
Actual Climb: 47 m

It was a long trip to the first control (111) but I found it without any trouble. Instead of following the stream that ran past the control I headed for the higher ground to the east of the stream. I found the ditch to the east of the stream and followed that until I reached the southward facing knob and then turned south. I was just about there when another person appeared from the other approach which (of course) helped me to locate 111.

I didn't have any trouble finding 112. I walked right past 113 but then doubled back and found it. 114 and 115 weren't difficult to find considering where they were placed.

This loop wasn't too difficult but considering the lay of the land it wasn't a piece of cake. It required a certain amount of care precision in route selection.

2016 Beer Chase - Loop 3
8 controls; 3 km, 50 m

Actual Distance Traveled: 3.5 km
Actual Climb: 63 m

This was the most difficult of the three loops, by far. I didn't have any real trouble finding any of the controls although I did have to circle around a little bit to find a couple of them. I'm not sure if it was just that I was careful and did a good job navigating or that I got lucky or possibly a combination of the two. I had a little bit of help finding 121 but after that I was entirely on my own. I saw a couple other people but they didn't lead me to any of the controls other than 121.

I was a bit disappointed when I got back to the end and they didn't have any beer ready for me. Instead I drank ice tea for my final beverage. I choked on the ice tea and had to drink it slower than I did the beer. I think it was the sweetness of the drink that caused me choke on it.

2016 Beer Chase - Final Thoughts

Excellent course designs by Ted. Great use of the terrain. The foliage can be kind of thick in places which adds to the challenge of orienteering at Jug Bay. The terrain is also repetitive enough that if I'm not careful I can make big mistakes very easily. I think that for the most part I played it safe today and that this strategy paid off for me.

I wasn't sure what to expect after the first loop so I was a little surprised when I wound up heading back in the same direction I had come from at the end of the first loop. It wasn't big a surprise because I saw a number of people headed past me as I headed from 102 to 103 on the first loop who I was certain were ahead of me.

It was very warm which isn't usual for this area in mid-June. I put on both sun block an bug spray, which I don't always do. I don't think I got sunburned and I didn't bring any ticks home with me.

I signed up to meet direct an event next December. Someone else already claimed Swanson Road, which means that I will get to orienteer there for the first time. The only three times I have been to Swanson Road it has been as meet director.

I stuck around for the awards ceremony and got a new shopping bag. After that I changed my shoes and socks and shirt and headed home. I tore a nice new hole in the left leg of my pants. For some reason I always seen to get tears in the left leg. I'm not sure why. I've had the pants for several years so I've probably got my money's worth out of them.

Jefferson Dr to Upshur St - I probably should have ended this leg of the trip home at Kenyon St; I just barely made it to Upshur St without incurring any usage fees; another 20 seconds and I would have been charged $1.50 for this ride; I spent about 8:30 stopped at red lights; I'm kind of a stickler for waiting for the green

Bicycling 20:50 [3] 4.0 mi (5:13 / mi) +164ft 5:01 / mi

Upshur St to Division St - the timing for a couple of the lights once I get close to downtown Takoma Park seems to have changed; I used to be able to just barely make it from Blair Road to Eastern Ave in time for the green but now I see the light at Eastern turn green and then red as I am approaching it from about a block away and then I end up waiting about 40 seconds for the next green once I got to Eastern
