Not the ride I planned for today. I was dressed with the roadbike for a long open road ride, but going out the door is was too wet and foggy so I switched to the unit. Traded a wind stopper for a grime collector, repacked snacks and traded shoes.

About 20 minutes out I met a couple of long runners that looked closer to bent and bash than I could have imagined possible. If he had had a bit more hair I would have had to stop and check id.

20 minutes later I learned that my heavy 4 hour battery was now only a 2 hour battery. This, of course was when I hit the densest fog - visibility about 100m. I looped around on the safest road and skipped the narrow hilly bit with lots of twists.

Still, not a bad ride.

Big unit at 4C in the fog. The old school halogen lamp with the giant battery kept me visible, but has no chance of lighting a dark trail.

Exposure lights on the way - I couldn't get gloworm shipped to either Canada or the US.

I did poach the big headlight from the Greenspeed and got it mounted on the unit in the hopes of some outdoor riding at the edges of the day.

Cross bike in the snow.

I had thought I might drop off a bag flight had borrowed from bash today if the weather was decent. First check of the radar showed showed a big blob of rain, but nothing falling at my door. I took the time for some stretching before heading out in the cold, then tried to mount my big light on the cross bike - but it had no chance of fitting without some new parts.

By then it was drizzling a bit, but I thought I'd see how far west I could get before the real weather hit and then see if I could race it home. The drizzle was light snow by the time I got all the layers on, but somehow that seemed better than rain. It seemed unlikely that I would make the whole trip so I didn't even take the bag.

Within 2km, the snow flakes were big and fat. By 4km they covered my glasses. I noticed that close to half the drivers hadn't put their lights on so decided they weren't likely to notice me as they came over a hill. One more climb and I headed back. The bike was pretty good in the conditions. I just didn't trust the other people on the road.

Awesome to have a chance to go out for a ride at lunch. A bit of a chill in the air and quite windy, but everything was just right inside my four layers.

I would have stayed out much longer if I didn't have to make a trip to the lab.

-4C according to the thermometer, but it was cold enough to form ice in my water bottle. My jacket is definitely not suited to below zero - I added one layer and that makes it a bit too cramped. The road booties are also bit too snug for my old school mountain shoes so I left them behind and let the toes get a bit chilly. I might switch to flat pedals for the cold season.

There was lots of ice on the trail. I was surprised how much water froze before making it down the slopes of the bridge underpasses. I ran pretty low tire pressure so it didn't bother me, but I had visions of a runner taking a bad step - turns out most of them were still napping. I didn't see one until 12.7km and not a soul on a bike.

The stumpjumper was happy to be outside.
