Easy river check at a cool 9C. There are still lots of wet spots and tons of muck, but none of the underpasses were flooded. The ground is so saturated that it feels like bog anywhere off the trail - like my back yard.

The water was just 2cm below flood under Green Lane. I headed across and did the perimeter of the west side (Garmin later - I want to see if there is enough traffic to map out the inner trails).

Solstice ride 1

The plan is to ride as many of my bikes as I can for about an hour each with a half hour break between.

North along the river, east on Mount Albert, south on Warden, west on Vivian. I ran 1100 lumens up front so east bound traffic on Mulock couldn't claim they didn't see me because of the rising sun.

I was out a couple minutes before dawn in 12C. The sun made it into my view as I came up from the river and started the road portion of the ride.

Solstice ride 2

It seemed like a good idea to give the fixie it's turn while my legs were fresh. My heart rate started to run up a bit in the third interval so I backed off the cadence by 3-4 rpm. The average was still going up at the end of the 4th interval so I dropped the cadence a bit more. It felt much warmer than the 13C the weather channel still claims so I guess I'll wear a jacket for the next ride too.

First food of the day: a handful of peanuts and a tiny yogurt.

I'll need to changes plans for ride 4 since the front tire I replaced a melted patch on lost air overnight.

ahr:133 max:151 shoes: Specialized S Works Mountain

Solstice ride 3

The last bike with Crank Brothers pedals. A fairly easy ride along the north river loop. The Green Lane underpass is no longer flooded, but the river left behind 5cm of its river bed so it was incredibly slick. The groomed trail still had quite a few soaked sections so I stayed off of the single track that usually needs a couple of days to dry out.

Now the first of three longer pit stops to take on some fuel.

Solstice ride 4

The air I out in the front of the road bike prior to ride 3 held, so I gave a shot at giving it a turn without putting my last new tube in a dead tire. Mrs. said she approved me going out Mulock/Vivian where she could find me if I flatted.

I got all the red lights, and still ran a fairly high heart rate climbing the moraine. It would have been a nice day to add in the Kennedy hills that I like to include in this ride, but a deal is a deal so no Wall of Doom today.

I believe this completes a metric for the day.

Solstice ride 5

Looking at the schedule I had given Mrs (so she wouldn't have to worry about where to find me or which bike to look for in the ditch) I noticed that I had only given myself 30 minutes for lunch and only allowed 60 minutes on the fattie. This meant I wouldn't be able to do the full south end of the Nokiidaa Trail. I had a strict turn around at half an hour, which happened to be where the nicest part of the trail starts.

The legs are just starting to feel the time spent on a traditional bike today.

More important: it was sad to see that the Mackenzie Marsh is up for sale. I hate to imagine how the new owner might treat was he protected as a bird sanctuary.

Road cycle long (Bacchetta) 1:25:21 intensity: (15 @1) + (1:13 @2) + (4:27 @3) + (37:10 @4) + (42:16 @5) 40.08 km (2:08 / km) +35m 2:07 / km
ahr:148 max:159 shoes: Gekko

Solstice ride 6

I took the longer lunch break and decided to do a longer ride on the stick bike, scrubbing the big single speed. I wanted to finish the 150 km for Canada's sesquicentennial on this ride. I stayed on a tight local loop that would give me minimal traffic.

In the first interval I got a handle on the shift points and turning pints and then just set the bike free. All intervals after that were right around 10:30 which I was really happy with seven hours into the day. At the 31 km that would give me 150 for the day it looked like I could reclaim my fast 40 record that Harmin chose to obliterate when I wasn't looking. I stopped the clock at 40km and cruised home.

So...
- furthest ridden in a day since my DVTs, by about 20%
- fastest 40km since my DVTs by a minute or so - after having already ridden 120km

A couple of extra sets and lots of bonus reps taking advantage of a mostly pain free shoulder. More exciting was that I woke in the night to observe that for the first time in ages my right finger tips didn't feel like I had stuck them in a fire - didn't last, but if it can go away for a minute, it can go away long term. Probably the result of booking an appointment with a regular doctor.

ahr:120 max:147 shoes: Specialized SWorks road

I could actually see where the sun was so went out for an easy ride, which ended up easier than I planned because of how much water there was. I got quite a bit of road spray in the face, and elsewhere. All of the underpasses were flooded, the worst being under Green Lane which would have put most of the trike under water.

I headed home when a regular mountain cyclist warned me the water on the path would be butt high for me around the next corner. I did go to look, and he was right.

I should note that the last two rides on the Greenspeed have stressed my shoulder some.

But...the Greenspeed is in great running order. My latest method of mounting the GloWorm battery is rock solid. I should put a new Velcro strip on the light switch so I can keep it in reach but otherwise everything is set for a big ride.

I got the other video from the June 3 ride ready. This one is the north end of the Nokiidaa Trail - about 2 1/2 minutes of the nature of the trail. Most of it is north of the bridge that stopped 'Bent and I last year.

And I hadn't added the GPS to my log so here is the Garmin track of the ride for the two videos. This one is all the part north of Green Lane (19 on the Garmin map).

I converted the forward flies from soloflex to free weights (as they were normally done in Pennsylvania). It lets me use more weight than the resistance profile of giant rubber bands allows (me) and lets me have a wide range of motion. Just another step in trying to self manage my shoulder issues.

New trail day: south end of the Orangeville-Owen Sound trail I went north on last fall.

I headed out after dropping my mom off for her lunch. The trail is a few blocks from where she lives. It wasn't a ride I would recommend. It was very peaceful - I didn't see a soul on the trail the whole ride. It is pretty straight and mostly level along the top of the highlands. The trail was suitable for any mountain bike with a few loose sections were your rear tire might move around on you.

The trail was about 50% farmland with crop, 25% farmland with just a plowed field and 25% wood lands. I did see deer merrily running across the trail and 100s of tiny monarch butterflies - they were about the size of a loonie.

After two hours working on bikes and three hours getting Mrs. iPads in the state she wants, an outing was in order. I new the temperature but was still surprised how hot it felt not working too hard.

Mostly short clubs again, but did finish off with a 150 yard (for me) club. Mostly straight today though the first few shots didn't want to bother getting very high in the sky. If this keeps my shoulders loose, it is much cheaper than the bone cracker or the muscle masher.

Search for a 3 minute hill.

It turns out there isn't a handy one that isn't in a high traffic area. At least not to the east.

It wasn't too hot yet when I went out, but the light wind was noticeable during southbound and westbound segments. My front tire has been quite light on air before I started so I was half expecting a flat. It seemed to be holding up until my second crossing of grated road with an end lip of about 6cm. I didn't immediately flat, that I noticed, but stopping at the next red I was clearly out of air. It was just over a kilometre home so I hobbled back for breakfast.

Note

Quite warm mowing today. A side benefit of a battery mower is that you can only stay out as long as your batteries last. The one battery per day since last mow formula seems to be holding up.

Search for market.

Mrs. wanted to go to the Aurora market but wasn't sure where it was so I offered to scoot down on the fattie and find it. I sent back a map and a landmark photo for decent parking then roamed the area until they showed up. A half hour later I decided they must be making some other stops and headed into Sheppards Bush.

The growth is so rich this year that there is plenty of shade and it didn't feel nearly the 32C my (always optimistic) Garmin said it was. There were two different run/walks on the south trail today.

The woods at the bottom of our hill are swarming with mosquitoes this year. That extra two months of ponded water was just what they are waiting for. I only exploded a couple today.

Bootleg 6hr

I thought I would give it a shot even though my race was cancelled. I decided on 7am to 1pm since my preferred time of day to ride is morning. I've ridden 6 hours in a day before but never set out to pack as much riding as I could into 6 hours.

Hour 1: I started 4 minutes late because I had to retape a tear in my seat. The yellow tape I had used didn't have a good enough adhesive to stay on overnight, so it certainly wasn't going to keep the seat from tearing more. I just did small local loops. Average heart rate at the end of the hour was 147, so I went to the north loop where there would be more people, which would moderate the pace my legs wanted to do, but probably wasn't sustainable.

Hour 2: I tried to keep the heart in the mid 140s when pushing and trust natural slow downs to moderate the average. Average rate after 2 hours was 144, so mission accomplished.

Hour 3: There were more people out so this hour ended with the average heart rate down to 141. I started eating some of my snacks during this hour.

Hour 4: I started with a 5 minute break during which I pealed off some clothes since it had warmed up considerably from the 5C I started at. I finished the food I had packed, except the emergency waffle which had caffeine and I'd already had 50mg in a gel. As expected this far into a ride, my average heart rate started creeping up as I finished at 142. Perhaps in part because I felt good after the brief pause and pushed a bit harder for a couple of intervals before I remembered to manage my heart rate.

Hour 5: I ran out of water at about 4:30 and planned to head home for a final pit as this hour finished. At 4:57, as I started the climb up from the river, my rear derailleur cable broke. I dropped the front onto the granny and contemplated my options. I completed hour 5 with an average heart rate of 143.

Hour 6: I started with an 8 minute pit at home, rinsed off some salt, grabbed an extra drink and gobbled a muffin. I spent most of a minute deciding if I should go back out and finish in single speed mode. The middle on the front was a tolerable gear if I looped around our block - about 600m. I stopped 1 minute before the sixth hour ended at what I believe Garmin will declare to be my longest ride ever.

Nutrition: 1 gel, 1 pack of chews, 1oz of pepperoni (sort of) stick, 1 Tailwind, plus the muffin at home.

Video run of north loop. The entrance to the northern single track is accessible all the time now, but the east side is completely closed until fall. I expect they are upgrading the bootleg single track to a groomed trail.

It was a good ride with a few surprises:
- the bowl has terrain features everywhere now, including where I exited in the past
- the devious single plank bridge was enlarged
- some of my old lines are washed away

The GoPro battery died just as I was coming out of the last bit of single track.

River ride to checkout the setup. I had to change the rear light mount to make it a bit more snug. I'm going to have to snug up the mirror as well, and I think I'll angle it a bit closer so I can see bikes sliding up for a close pass on the track. It is currently set to give me a wide view of two lanes of car traffic.

Garmin battery ran out a bit over a kilometre from home so I used the bike computer - this is the last bike that I keep a computer on with a good battery, mostly so I can monitor cadence on long rides.
