Tour de Pierre stage 5

For the TT I went over to the moraine to do a largish block I had noticed some time trailers from a club doing.

Fairly easy to the block and then tried to keep a good pace up until I finished it. 4 hard stops complicate the pacing a bit. Nice power on the climbs. Then an easy roll back to the truck.

Tour de Pierre stage 4

I didn’t think I had time to get up to the lake and ride before today’s second rain came, so repeated the local loop to avoid getting wet. I started out an extra push while it was cool(er) and overcast. Once the sky cleared, I settled into my endurance pace, just trying to keep intervals in the 10s.

Foot traffic picked up at about 8:00. Lots of it well into the road (we have a sidewalk), presumably to avoid dropping caterpillars. By 9:00 it was warm enough for the pedestrians to go inside and all the cars came out.

My heart stayed pretty relaxed today. More so than I expected. Perhaps I'm in better shape than I thought.

Tour de Pierre stage 3

I must have booked my early blood test before deciding how to do the tour this year. I had 2:15 to do as much of a flat stage as I could. If necessary, I would finish with a lazy roll in 30+C.

Wind was relatively light to start so I worked a bit to try to get the necessary pace going without having had anything to eat or drink. First lap was right on target, but the wind started to pick up so I tried to settle in to a good endurance effort.

The sun was already baking me half way through the second lap, but traffic was light so I was able to maintain my pace. At about 50km, the wind seemed to back off, which meant I wouldn’t get my 10km tailwind to finish. I guzzled my entire bottle in one swallow at the turn back and leaked over the target 2:15 just by the final roll to the truck. 3 spare minutes to grab an orange juice and put on a pair of pants before my appointment.

Still a bit under hydrated after over a litre of water at home.

Tour de Pierre stage 2

This is more what I consider a hill stage. Climbing to the marsh and back from the marsh. Today, the wind on the marsh was harder than the actual climbs. I mostly took a relaxed endurance pace, really only pushing on 3 segments - two of which gave me top 10 Strava spots.

I did milk the tailwind out on the marsh to get home in time to catch the end of today’s tour.

Tour de Pierre stage 1

While thinking of my last hour of sleep, I noticed it wasn’t raining so rushed out in hopes of beating the rain scheduled for the day. It was wet and windy, but not raining so I did 46km before stopping to get some breakfast.

I headed out with fresh water to finish off and it started to drizzle at 48km. At 55km the rain stopped and I briefly saw a hint of sun behind the clouds. Traffic started to pick up but the biggest concern was cars backing out of their driveway in front of me (3 of them in about 15 minutes).

Rain picked up at 62km, but didn’t get too bad before I finished off. Today was more elevation than I will target for hilly stages - it is closer to my mountain target.

Oh: this year’s Tour plan is to combine my age challenge deficit with the tour. I’ll ride my age for stages longer than 100km. 100-130km for stages over 200km.

It was a bit too windy, but o wanted to get a session in before a week of rain.

Nice day for a relaxed ride in spite of the wind.

Rise and Ride session 5 with the women’s group Flight is training. It is a 2 hr Saturday program.

For the first half, I cruised along as sweep. I forgot to turn my Garmin back on after the first pause and missed about half an hour being recorded. Not tragic.

In the middle, I did a few hills at my own pace and then finished trying to bridge between the fast people out front and the more tired people in the back.

A bit of rain, but not enough to spoil anyone’s day.

The rain stopped long enough for me to try to get my next drone session in on the marsh. It was pretty quiet out there. Lots of hired help pulling weeds and checking the crops.

As I set up for the last bit of footage, I notice it raining not far to the west so I headed back as soon as I got that take done. Just a few drops as I turned back east, but I stayed in front of it handily. It was interesting to see the Garmin temperature profile go from 27, down to 20, back up, down again and then up as I finished. I must have looped through the edge of a front, which might also explain the unpredictable wind direction.

There was huge growth along Jane, so I'll try to piece that together soon.

A huge thunder as soon as I got to the house, but no rain with it.

Solo Ride to Conquer Cancer Hammer distance

The ride has been moved to late August, but like last year, I decided to go out on the original date.

I got out early while the air was still and pushed the effort a bit to make the most of it. I started to feel some wind around 25km, but it didn’t really show its face until 40km. I just did loops around the marsh for the first leg of a bit over 70km, then stopped for breakfast. When I stopped, it became apparent how dirty the canal water they were spraying on the fields as. I got soaked a few times and was able to ignore the dirt I knew was in it until I stopped.

For the second leg, I looked around Holland Landing. Lots of leafless trees there. And lots of caterpillars trying to drop into my face. It was kind of gross, so as much as possible, I stayed close to the centre of the road to be out of reach of most of them.

Back to the marsh to finish up. J and Mrs opted to meet me for ice cream just before I finished up, so I targeted getting in 157km by 1:30. At 145km my Garmin complained about its battery, so I turned off what I could hoping to record the whole session. After ice cream, it was reluctant to turn back on so I threaten to finish with my phone - that smartened it up.

My feet were starting to get fat at about 153km so I had to loosen them a bit. I took extra time on the air compression to try and get things back to normal.

Age rides 16&17 (+5 indoors). This puts me at the 1/4 mark for outside rides

A few laps around the block between rains. There was a light mist when I went out, then some garbage truck dodging and an unintended wave in from Mrs.

I tried one more lap when the real ran started, in case it was just a tease. I wasn’t, so I pushed the effort to see if my heart monitor was reading properly. It seems to be.

But, then I had to brake had at the driveway and Garmin decided it was an incident so sent Mrs a message. I was a bit surprised it didn’t include a location. It did give me an invitation to send a follow up “I’m ok”.

Finished up the trail to the river path. The garage now has room to move again without 20 bags of old tree parts in it. I had to store some to avoid too much stress on my toes for a few days.

Mosquitos were fierce even getting out before it was extremely sweaty weather. For normal use, the trail should allow going faster than them. I exploded a couple spreading chips.

Windy ride out to and around the marsh. The cross wind required full attention to keep from getting tossed in the ditch. It seemed to affect other riders more than me, because I passed everyone I saw in front of me today. Most of the while the cross wind was in play.

I went mostly at my 4-5hr pace in anticipation of the Ride to Conquer Cancer. Approaching 50km, my heart monitor cut out and then started to read artificially high. I don’t believe any of the reading above 165 are accurate. There was a fair amount of salt accumulated on the strap, so I'll see if cleaning that sorts it. If not I’ll replace the battery, and if it’s still wonky, the whole strap.

I felt like I could use a rest day, but was overdue to get new drone footage of the marsh so I drove out and took a relaxed ride around.

I’ve struggled a better to get air for a few days. I’m blaming it on breathing a bit too much ash and smoke while getting our chipped spruce down the hill in the backyard.

The marsh is getting pretty busy. Lots of planting, laying hose and spraying water. It was a beautiful day to be out. Next up, collecting summer tires and getting the tree chips down the hill before it rains again - probably down to the last 10%

On the bright side, my scales said my metabolic age was 39 and Garmin said my fitness age was 42. I have no idea what their math is, but I'll take it.

I took the fixie out for a spin to see how the fixed gear legs are working. This year I adjusted to the constant motion pretty quickly, except for my instincts to stop pedalling and get out of the seat for a speed bump.

The workout part of this with ant elevation is to manage the speed downhill without brakes. It turns out with Covid traffic levels on the path, quick response to random movements of others is a good leg workout.

Beautiful afternoon.
