Probably two more sessions to clear the driveway.
It appears to have been a strategic error to take yesterday off because the damp snow sandwiched between sheets of ice became a ice cube itself...so 2cm of ice on the bottom, 2.5 cm of frozen wet snow in the middle and just under a cm of ice as top coat.
My arms and shoulders are ready for a nap.

Today's ice breaker is even more demanding. The walk was 1/2 to 1 cm, a layer of heavy snow and a top coat of more ice. The ice on my car windows was noticeably thicker than the window itself.

Round 5 of ice breaker and the driveway is 25% back to winter normal.

Round 6 gives me clear space for two cars.

This exercise did give me a very clear reminder that no matter how seductive TT bikes are, there is no point getting one because I wouldn't be able to ride it. I'll have to continue to live vicariously through flight.

On the other had, there is lots of baking to replace the calories I burn smashing ice.

Round 7: one side of the driveway and the side walk are clear. I quit.

Ice breaker part one - just enough to clear the front walk - about 12% of what I have to do.
Parts 2 & 3 were a bit easier because the ice was thicker and could be smashed with vigour.
Still only cleared half of then driveway.
The rest will wait until the new rain finishes.

I tested out my new exposure lights and an old down ski jacket this morning. The lights are great. The front lamp made signs bright from 100m and made everything my tire threw in front of them look like a jewel. I might need a wider beam if I was going to ride tight trails in the dark, but this is fine for road or path.

The jacket wasn't so great. A bit of more modern technology than what was available in the 80s is necessary to keep out the wind. The weakest link, however was the toes with regular mountain shoes - maybe they rebelled permanently, because one of the straps broke as my freezing finger tips were taking them off.
