Note

Habitat permits came through to Vince and I were finally able to reset the incorrectly place stairwell beams and get three houses ready for joists so groups can lay the second floor.

Somehow my wallet got stuck under a beam and put a nice 45 degree kink in my driver’s license and ancient red and white health card.

I wanted to take one more ride up to the lake to capture the optimum route for the trike. 5C was a bit warmer than I expected for the start. Still, it was 10km before I really felt my body warmed to a comfortable place.

At the intersections northbound, I noticed my flags blowing over my head so tried to manage my pace to have enough energy for the return into the wind. The roads were pretty quiet and the lake was almost deserted.

I headed back feeling pretty good. At least until it started to rain at 49km. I briefly considered arrange a pickup, but hoped I would ride south out of the rain. I cleared the rain at 60km, but noticed my right knee really wasn’t happy with the climbs so dropped a couple of gears to reduce the stress.

I took a call from flight at about 65 km and wasn’t smart enough to put my gloves in my jacket si my hands were chilly to finish up. And the light rain caught up to me at 73km. Still a nice, though slow, outing.

No building allowed at Habitat today, and maybe for 3 weeks.
So...built a storage closet in the garage and moved everything from a rented bin into it (walking was to and from the bin on the opposite corner of the property).

The electricians liked it so asked us to build them one too so they could lock their stuff in it overnight and not pack it into their trucks every day.

Permit is withheld until we can ensure windows won’t blow out onto the raised concrete walkway in a fire.

Took J up to Rogers Reservoir. We had a slow start with a couple of pauses to set the rear suspension in a way she was comfortable with. I lowered the seat dropper of the fattie so we could switch, but she felt it was still too big. Then the seat was reluctant to lock back into the up position for me.

We turned around short of the end of the trail hoping to avoid rush hour traffic and mostly succeeded, but she fell behind on the last hill and we missed each other when I looked back to meet her so did an extra bit.

Pretty light duty at Habitat today since I had a big enough group that I could let them do most of the moving stuff around. They were quite excited to finish the day having built more walls (by one) than the other two groups combined. We didn’t work especially hard, but tried to be efficient.

Somehow I twisted my right knee yesterday - probably a bad turn trying to hoist a beam while on a ladder. It didn’t impact any of my stretches, but doesn’t like stairs very much.

This was a true fall ride. I was a bit overdressed for 8C. The path along the river was lightly traveled today. I did catch the town taking away the outhouses from all the park areas and blocking off the permanent (and usually locked) bathrooms, so that will have to figure into planning for longer rides for the next few months.

Quite a demanding day at Habitat today. The morning was cool and wet and when I went back out after lunch I couldn’t shake a chill.

Today I was putting first floor ceiling level beams in place: 4x10” and 12-20 feet long. Tough to lift into place, and really hard to get level. I’ll go back later in the week when Vince is available to sort out the level.

The biggest challenge was figuring out how to deal with inspection results. Apparently the slick sheeting+vapour barrier+insulation in a unified sheet is only approved for single family dwelling, not multi family. Now we have exterior walls for 12 houses that we need to recover in three layers - one applied before we place the walls and the other two after electrical work is done. Little chance of beating winter now.

Only 1/3 of today’s Habitat group showed up. This is highly irregular as we often have a few extras show up hoping to get in with their company at the last minute. We could have used more people to prep the last two units of building 2 for final inspection tomorrow.

While the crew cleaned and did some touch up painting, I carried left over materials to fill a truck load of stuff to go to the ReStore. It includes about 800 square feet of flooring and trim for about a house and a half.
