Note

I tested some trikes while picking up some new rubber for the Greenspeed yesterday. Ice makes some nice really fast trikes, but they are huge. The low profile and a 27 inch road drive wheel make it a speed machine. Not nearly as nimble as my Greenspeed though. I wanted to test and Ice to see what it's construction was like before seriously considering an Adventure for terrain that is too rugged for the Greenspeed.

That led to a debate about the merits of suspension. The dealer felt it was king of a waste and favored just putting big tires with a decent tread on it. He might be right for the trails around me, where the parts that are wide enough to get a trike through just need some ground clearance and some grip, and tires that don't need 90 psi to run well.

A couple of very high ground clearance trikes weighed a ton, and were really only suited for puttering around.

Smokie Camp Hill through Carlyle and back. A very pleasant last ride of my ride every day of the Tour campaign. Three consecutive sub 12 intervals was quite satisfying, especially given that I didn't have to work terribly hard to do it.

Smokie on country roads. More demanding road than yesterday, but 15C cooler, little wind and my fluids and electrolytes were back where they belong.

Easy pace and even managed to keep the heart rate interest 150s on the 7-11% grades. Made it back in time to see the first summit in today's Tour.

Smokie in slightly less heat - 36C when I started. There was a strong headwind on the outbound leg. I didn't ride too hard because I wasn't sure if I had fully hydrated after yesterday. At about 25 km I felt a bit chill, which can't be good when the air temperature is close to body temperature.

I drank about half the water I had left and looped home, finishing up the food and drink I had over the next 10 minutes or so. Back home ate a couple of salt tablets and mixed a beer with a V8.

Smokie in 41C. Left work a half hour early to get ahead of the commuters. It was very hard to stay hydrated. I drank about twice as much as I do in the low 30s.
The heart rate was inclined to run a bit even on modest grade hills so I stayed on the small chain ring to curb my enthusiasm for riding during the Tour - now I'll watch the live feed I recorded this morning.

Spin. 40C when I left work. I would have cycled but I was late enough that traffic was not bike friendly.

Smokie after work. Only 37C today so there were a couple of other bikes out, but no runners.
It did make me wonder at what temperature I would stay inside - maybe 40, depending on how bored I was.

Not a single other person out riding or running today.
