Tried the south trails of the fattie today. As expected, the Aurora sections were much icier, but it was fairly lumpy so the grip was good. And the fat tires are quite happy to go through the snow drifted to the side of the trail. I took some branches that had very little travel and that would have been questionable on the mountain bike. The fattie really is a lot of fun.

It was slightly warmer today at -5C vs. -8C yesterday, but the wind was quite brisk. I stuck with the 80s ski jacket up top, but switched to the dry suit style knickers on the bottom. The torso got a bit warm on the downhill return, but not enough to bother trying to unzip with the lobster gloves.

Mountain bike (FatBoy) 1:34:00 [3] 17.9 km (5:15 / km) +89m 5:07 / km

First ride on the new fat bike. I figured a 3 hour wait after my blood test was close enough to 24 hrs for what I expected to be a moderate effort. Tire pressure was about 8psi, but I don't have a pump to measure at those low levels at present. It was good for most of the ride. A couple of spots where a lot of dog walking occurred were quite icy and the rear slid a bit.

Started down the snowy hill behind the house then crossed the river and found some new trails that were bog when I went out on the mountain bike. There was about 45 minutes worth of fresh cycling on the east side, including a bit of a run through the terrain park across the railway tracks. I took some photos which I'll get on a computer a bit later to share.

Far more fun when you own the bike than any of the tests, which were pretty fun. 'Bent needs to give this a try. Then get 3inch rubber on something.

Some techie bits:
- 4.6 inch rubber
- race face crank 28
- X1 10-42 rear
- chain tools tucked in the headstock
- another tool kit mounted on the bottom of the bottle cage

Max power test.

This time I controlled the slope rather than power level. The plan was for a power run every 10 minutes. I would increase slope when I maxed out my cadence and gearing.

Run 1: a warm up to get a feel for the run up in the gears and cadence. I backed off at 600 watts comfortable that I had the power delivery in good shape.

Run 2: full charge continuing the cadence surge after I got to the top gear. Peaked at 974 watts at a cadence of about 120. Heart peaked at 174, so I had a little left.

Run 3: since the last run was close to 1000 watts, I left the slope at zero and tried to push out a slightly higher cadence. I got the 1000 pretty handily but could only hold it for 23 seconds. Peaked at 1016 at 123 rpm and heart 173. Speed showed as 65.1 km/hr, which I would not be likely to hit on the flats outside.

Power: max-1016, new PB by 3 watts

Oh...side note regarding short session. I thought my heart was running a bit high during warmup and recovery, but just before the 3rd power run I remember I had been teaching most of the day so on my feet quite a bit. So...I settled for a PB and went to stand on my head for a bit. On a typical day my heart average would come in at the low 130s.

Cardio (snow removal machine) 1:20:00 [3]

Part 2: uncovered Mrs. car and Frank's (the old neighbour's) car and remove to move around them. It is about 45 minutes per car. Time deducted for breaks enforced by Frank after he came out. It is the biggest snow in his lifetime of living in the area. The official reports smashed the old record by 6 inches.

Cardio (snow removal machine) 1:00:00 [3]

Moving the big snow part 3: One last car to dig out, then paths so 3 cars could drive straight to escape and relocate to a clean parking space. Time deducted for advising on technique: everyone wanted to jam the gas hard and steer dramatically.

It has become a really great day with a clear blue sky. Mrs. and I took a long, leisurely walk between rounds of shoveling. The coffee shops were all closed, but luckily I have a vast stash of what may be the best hot chocolate makings on the planet (from Monte Blanc - the mountain, not the pen)
