Note

While uploading my Garmin logs I noticed the heat map suggested a long trail pretty close to my mom. I was pyched to give it a try after visiting today, but remembered in the middle of the night that I need to keep my weekly activity level at 10 hrs until Monday...so I walked over to at least get a look at it. Very little parking in Shelburne - really just a few 3hr street spots that might be open on hwy89.

The trail isn't as nicely groomed as most of these wide gravel ones. It shows what looks like ATV track impressions and the surface has lots of big (10 cm or so) rocks with hard edges. I might take the fattie. My car said 450m altitude so I'll have to plan for some climbing on the way back.

The trail appears to run from Orangeville to Owen Sound. I'll probably take it north 80-90 minutes on the 28th, weather permitting.

This was much more tense than I expected. Heading out from the house there was a brutal tree trimmer just grinding up everything in reach as it slowly drove by. It pretty much chewed up space from the nice maples lining the road for a cube van to not touch a branch anymore.

West on Mulock I had to navigate 2x8s in the road. South on Hwy 48 traffic was much heavier than usual, likely cottage folk heading back to the city a day late. West on Bloomington was brutal with a combination of truck turbulence and the south wind pushing over the top of the Morraine forcing me to fight to keep my little slice of the road.

I decided to cut back to the north ledge on Warden which doesn't have as many steep hills as Kennedy (just one 13% climb needing the small chain ring). That was much more civilized except for the red Mercedes that needed to pass a truck at the crest of the hill I was climbing.

Back east on Vivian with its normal weekday chaos. I bailed at the river path and took an easy cruise back home.

Race against the rain.

The weather channel said rain starting at 8:40am and the radar seemed to support that so I thought in could get in 30km, maybe 35 if I got out early enough.

Straight west on Mulock into an opening for the rising sun that lasted about 5km. A bit of dampness on the road at 10km that I guessed was a remnant of the northern finger in the rain. Since it was going to be a short ride I pushed the climbs, but managed a chain-gate with a premature shift to the big ring cresting a 9% climb - too low a cadence and too far up on the cassette. This put me at Hwy 48 at 7:44 and I had set 7:45 as the time to head back.

I pushed the return pace trying to maintain the outbound 149 average heart rate and hit big drops of rain half an hour early with about 5km to go. I beat the man body of rain though. Outbound 40 minutes, return 30.

North end of the river trail checking all the side Spurs around Rogers Reservoir. They generally end at a picnic spot not far from the main trail. All the creeks 'Bent and I crossed in July are dry, though the weeds grown above my wet were all soaked with morning dew.

The wind was picking up pretty good where it channels along the river behind the house.

Took Mrs. backup bike over to the shop. Rear brake leaked its hydraulic fluid and I'm not equipped to bleed the line or top up the tiny reservoir. Given how many bikes we now seem to have with hydraulics, I might have to get the right tools.

Note
(rest day)

Blood test came back a bit under the therapeutic range after a rolling 15 hour week. This is a bit lower than I expected so it as a good thing I started the experiment with an effort I expected to keep me in the low end of the therapeutic range.

Rather than going to a 20 hour week, I'll test how long it takes the two day average to drop the results out of the target range. This test was on day 15 of a two hour average, so next I'll test it after 7 days of a two hour average.
