Last day of the Tour so did one of my favourite routes for the road bike. At the top of the last climb on Warden, it looked like I would be 3km short of my 52km target so I looped through two of the three subdivisions on the way back. The northern most was about 80 large homes with rider mower worthy, professionally landscaped yards. The southern one was about 20 homes on even bigger lots.

Just before I made the turn west on Vivian to go home a guy from Pickering caught up to me. I upped my pace a bit so we could chat before the turn. He was planning 156km for the day.

Note

Riding with the Tour de France didn't go remotely as planned this year. My rolling hours/year dropped almost 50 hrs from start to finish. I did learn that Tour de Pierre is somewhat incompatible with Habitat build days and is completely incompatible with a family emergency.

But, I don't have to come up with a new idea for next year.

A quick ride before the morning rain. I started on the south loop daring the projected 7am rain and when the skies lightened a bit I turned north to map out the full extent of the Greenspeed trail (Garmin to come).

Much of the typical Saturday traffic must have been scared off by the threat of rain.

Mostly small clubs again, but I did hit a few extras with the big boy. A bit of tightness in the right shoulder showed a bit.

Just the essentials hoping to get as long a ride a possible before the rain.

Rain was projected for 11:00 am so I hoped to get 75km in before it started.

North along the river to the reservoir which I planned to ride around for 25km, then 25km on the paved loop south of that, then finish up on the loop closest to home.

I kept watch for my Canadian flag, which the woods had stolen on Tuesday - no luck. I paused for a chat with two women I had met last year and were hoping for some more navigational assistance. I guess they liked where I sent them last year.

The air started to feel pretty heavy by 50 km. At 60km I heard the first thunder. At 62km I saw the first lightening, which was massive so I headed home. I opted for the longer way which has no traffic to deal with. At 64km there was a thunder crack that lasted a good 5 seconds and set the rain free. I happened to turn out of the rain and managed to get the garage open before the big rain hit our house.

Scales say body water content is down 5%. Perhaps not the best time to spend 4+ hours on the bike he's warning out.

Walk/hike warm up/down 40:00 [2] 3.5 km (11:26 / km)

Took Mrs around Rogers Reservoir to see the new setup. The return required a bit of pine forest bushwhacking to skirt around a bog on the hydro right of way. LOTS of mosquitoes, several of which I exploded.

Extra care to stretch things out after using my shoulder as a pry bar yesterday.

The body felt a bit sluggish after so much time on my feet yesterday so an easy recumbent ride was in order. Once I got going, I felt decent.

I thought it would be a good day to try the nice new bike lane on second concession and was able to get the Greenspeed up to it without going on the road (I'll add the Garmin later today). I did have to cross the mud slick under Green Lane, which was a bit tricky on the slick Scorchers. The gravel up from Rogers Reservoir wasn't too bad as long as I kept the torque low. Most of the bike lane is protected by a shallow curb and it is all nice and wide. It gets the trike about 5km further north.

There were a few fun minutes with a couple of 11 year old boys. They were southbound on the west side of the river while I was on the east and I heard an "oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, that is awesome".
I looped around and met them on the west side where they lined themselves up for a flying high five and repeated their little chant before asking "are you in the Olympics".

ahr:157 max:166 shoes: Gekko

Target for the second ride was 28km, which I thought I might be able to do in an hour on the stick bike with no traffic.

Tight loops at home with warm up 5km then trying to keep the heart around 160. Nice quick second interval, then a truck and trailer started parking on my side of the corner which took a bit off the pace. Still managed 28.8km as the clock ticked over the hour. This will be a new post DVT hour mark for me, ignoring some really fast runs down the Rockies.

It was too warm to try for a new fast 40km without any water on the bike. I'll have to come up with a solution for that.

Lots of pushing and pulling over 6 1/2 hours today straightening out walls on the first floor of three units. It was a good lesson in framing. I didn't hammer any nails today - but I did use a pneumatic nail gun.

We didn't have time to put in the Windows that the wall builders forgot.
