Walk/hike 30:00 [3]
The B&B we had planned to stay at on the Natchez Trace didn’t look like a good match for us, so we left the Trace.
On the way we did a bit of hiking. The Trace itself is beautiful. The road rarely has a shoulder, but there are no cross streets. The Trace goes over perpendicular roads and has a loop off one side to get down to them. Traffic is light - we saw about 1 car/km. Bikes are told they have the right to the whole lane and cars much pass by changing lanes, though for most of the Trace that means crossing a double yellow.
Mrs vetoed cycling on the north end because sight lines were terrible. 11 miles south though, it opened up. There is plenty of elevation change, but I didn’t see more than 100m in any one stretch. Mostly it was 10-30m at a time and not terribly steep.
There are places to pull in every few miles, but services are infrequent. You would pretty much have to take everything you needed with you. I think I would need to carry 4 bottles for a decent days ride. I didn’t have enough water to ride today - we barely had enough for a short hike.
