Tour de Pierre stage 18
Barrie to Orillia rail trail with Mrs

Mrs wanted to do this ride, so I started about 1/3 north from the beginning hoping to keep her time in the sun to about 2 hours. This is a lightly used trail with ten or so road crossing in the section we were on. The surface is mostly fine gravel. It was a bit deep in a couple of spots and my rear end tried to wash out. There are lots of options for better gripping rubber, at least on the 26” rear.

The two little mirrors worked really well. It is nice to see over both shoulders. The water bottle holders turned out to be easy to use on the move.

Mrs opted not to get a drink in Orillia and payed the price about half way back. I had her finish her bottle and then gave her my spare after taking a gulp from it. It still wasn’t enough to reenergize her. She still finished up happy. More so after a 4km drive where I got her a chocolate milk and a bottle of water.

Good first ride on the Giro. I’ll see how it feels with a bit more speed tomorrow.

Tour de Pierre stage 17
Holland Marsh

I drove up to Anchor Park and road around Holland Landing a bit. It is full of dead ends, so I scooted over to the marsh. It was hot enough that the thin rubber strips they patched the road with were slippery enough that I had to be quite attentive. They tried to wash out the front twice before I tried to avoid them as much as I could.

Once it the marsh, the roads were just beat up. I stayed on the nicest of them and did a U turn at 20km when I got a call from Flight rather than try to find a loop back on decent roads. I do think this will be a nice area for the Giro.

It was interesting to see farm worker bikes lined up in the ditch on the side of the road while they were picking.

Note

Got the Giro set up for how I think suits me, subject to a proper ride. The little mirrors on each side might not make the cut, at least on the left side.

I set the seat to BB as for Strada and tossed an old pack of tubes and a nice mini pump in the pack on the back. Added a mount for my Garmin and some red Crank Brothers pedals. The bottle holder might be too tight a fit to reach behind my back and pull out while riding - we’ll find that out shortly. The front valve stem is a bit bent - maybe not enough to be an issue.

The first lap around my 600m block the rear disc rubbed. It was good and hot when I pulled back into the driveway. I adjusted it as much as I could. There might still be a small contact point. It didn’t rub when I tested it at the shop so something might have bumped the disc. It looks slightly warped. Another run sounded ok and the disc wasn’t any warmer than the front.

I don’t remember the trail surface from Barrie to Orillia very well, but might take it there with Mrs tomorrow. I’m sure it will be well suited to the Caledon Trail, so I will probably take it there Friday.

Tour de Pierre stage 16
South Lake Simcoe with Mrs

An easy ride along the lake shore with Mrs. This was about her limit out the mid day sun.

Followed up with a flight at 2nd Wedge.

River north to the lake

No need to rush out now that we are home. I wanted a longer ride so headed up to the lake, stopping just short to save the lake road for Mrs. there was about an hour worth of photo stops, messaging with Flight and a longish phone call. I was surprised to see it was 1pm when I got back - late for both breakfast and lunch.

I burned a good route for the Bacchetta(s) by not knowing which way the jog in Boag road went at Warden. Of well. It was on my candidate list as a good place to test the Giro.

No sprint points. No climb points. Still a nice ride. And I turned 2 billion.

River trail south

Took off for a ride after getting most of the truck unpacked. About 6km south there was a gang of about 50 adults apparently playing Pokémon Go - all standing at various pints in the middle of the trail staring at their phones.

Aurora put a bunch of fresh fine gravel on the trail so all hills were a bit dodgy. The area is full of mosquitoes, most noticeable at any photo stop.

I did notice how easy it was to get oxygen back at my normal elevation.

Note
(rest day)

Yesterday we learned the SUV AC is no match for 41C temperatures. We decided starting earlier today would spend more of our driving time comfortable. My mountain time walk up of 5:30 became 6:30 in Kansas and Mrs woke up before I got out of the room...so we grabbed breakfast and took off.

Then it wasn’t as hot today, so we drove until the sun threatened to set.

8 stages to go, probable including:
Home trail north
Home trail south
Mrs accompanied along Lake Simcoe south
Mrs accompanied Barrie to Orillia trail
Shelburne - Owen Sound (from my mom’s until I U turn)
Spirit Tree along the Caledon Trail
Maybe early weekend east on Mulock to 48 big block
Maybe Doane-404 east and north in the safe cycling block
Maybe Brown Hill tract - new ground

Tour de Pierre stage 13
Garden of the Gods, Colorado Springs

I set out to explore the plateau we were staying on, and hoping to crack through 2000m. The little complex we were in didn’t amount to anything and most things along the main road were gated. Back to the round about were we were staying, I slipped by the gate into the golf course community.

Roads were nice. There was virtually no traffic. The few people out were friendly. The counter clockwise loop started as a slow descent. I knew I would have to climb back up the 30m. When I found it on a steep grade, it was followed up by a long false flat easily pushing me over the 2000m mark.

After a nice second loop with no detours, I started looking for the exit - most of them had electronic gates for residents only. Once I got out, I took a run to the other end of the plateau to finish up.

Beautiful riding with miles and miles of bike paths and god road surfaces. I did notice this latest decrease in oxygen riding at a higher effort than yesterday.
