Mrs ride.

We started south on the beach. My rear was prone to washing out in what I thought was fairly well packed sand. I had to run on the wetter area just above where the dropping tide was to get reliable traction. It was a nice ride with a person to pass every 300-400m. At a hard barrier (a wall protecting a gated community, Mrs opted to return via the road.

Where possible, I took her to side roads to avoid weekend traffic on the beach road. I shot ahead a bit on the last few kilometres of the return.

Ride your age stage 3

It was windier than I liked this morning, especially at 7C, but I went out anyway since tomorrow will be colder and windier.

The north end of the beach road we are on was being grated so was quite bumpy. The south end had some deep standing water from yesterday’s rain, which sometimes fell at a centimetre per hour. I was able to avoid most of the deep water and only had to churn through one stretch that was over 10cm deep.

I felt a bit sluggish today, probably outlying the less than ideal conditions.

Nutrition: 1/2 Tailwind, 1 Rx bar (melted in my pocket), 1/3 cliff blok

Ride your age stage 2

Wind was light and the big rain wasn’t supposed to start until about noon so I headed out to do the north beach ride. I expected it to be very close to my 64km target.

I got a few minutes of sun at 20km and again at 37km. The wind started to pick up for the last 5km northbound, which meant I should have an easy ride back with a tailwind. Traffic stayed pretty light until I hit the highway stretch where I pushed a bit to minimize my time in it.

I stopped for a bagel sandwich at 56km, which delayed me enough to catch the rain at 63km - where Mrs was standing to wave as I shot by. I looked back early to avoid a super soaker. I’ll get a map for the entire beach stretch of a bit over 70km another day.

Nutrition: 1 Tailwind, 1 Rx bar (first try, a bit too chewy for me), plus the sandwich

Really nice beach house, but not a ton of open floor space. I might have to relocate my morning.

Ride your age stage 1

Mrs went out with me for the first 25km. It got up to 21C before the wind came up and she decided to bail. Then the temperature dropped to 14C fairly quickly. I was slightly under dressed to finish.

My legs were a bit more tired finishing than I believe they would have been if I had started with the quicker pace and finished slow. I felt good though.

I did catch all but 1 of a group of guys on their race bikes on my finish stretch. I had noticed them go by just before to made the turn and thought I would try to catch them. I handily passed the rear guard once I got the legs spun up.
