Struck by the magnitude of packing alone...planning in the abstract was much easier.

And now we see how heavy that snow is, and how icy the bottom is.

Other 1:00:00 [3]

Deep snow to clear out here. Round 1 was 1:45.
Maybe 45 minutes left to finish, if I’m not too lazy to bother.

After a few hours of good sleep, my brain decided it should plot a route on the merged Ukraine courses for picking up controls in the shortest distance. I should probably check the maps to see if sleepy head came up with the right plan.

Walk/hike 1:19:14 [3] 6.1 km (12:59 / km) +77m 12:13 / km

Ukraine O Cup flag collection.

I offered to pick up everything in the boundaries of the beginner course. That included the first 4 controls of the main course and 5 shared controls. I had already been to all of them, so had good visual references.

My route looks a bit choppier because of trying to optimize my travel time between the 2 maps. I do find blending maps a fun exercise.

Some of the flags were a bit tricky to untie, at least in chill air. There was a mix of: a couple of wraps around a branch an a quick clip to the main string; a loose knot that could be undone with one hand; and fussy little knots that had been pulled tight over the days they had been hanging.

A good excuse to spend some quality time out in great weather.

I was surprised how few people were on the trails today.

Oura gave me a 90 readiness score and a 93 sleep score this morning. I guess it liked my heart rate making it to 39.

Day 1 soloflex and free weights
1 PM

Walk/hike 1:12:00 [3] 6.27 km (11:29 / km)

Ukraine orienteering beginner course, plus a detour to get CP8 which I skipped on Saturday.

It warmed up to a civilized-12C so I thought I would go try the other course. If flags were still up, I would confirm where I thought CP8 should be. Subtracting to 20 minute detour, I would have cleared the beginner course in 52 minutes. Again, I had a pause to explain to some regulars what the flags were for - about 3 minutes.

I had left my Garmin at home, accidentally, so used Strava on my phone to record the trip. It worked quite well. I think it would be a cheat to look at it in a race though. It gives a bit too much reference information. I punched each checkpoint into my track and saw the map, but didn’t use it for navigation. The beginner course wasn’t quite as trivial as I assumed just looking at the map - there were trail selections to think about.

Strava map here. Pretty orderly
