Want to be intimidated on a ride? Try this: agree to go for a Sunday ride with the fast crew. Each of the three has at least one national championship, probably about ten between them.

Three of us arrived at the start at the same time. By the time I had my stuff ready, the fourth messaged they would be 6 minutes late. So I said “I guess that means I get a 6 minute head start”. Off I went. Rolling foothills for the first 8km and once I cleared that, I felt I probably really had a 15 minute head start and could probably make the 20km mark before they caught me. I push the effort on the gentle climb. Once I made the 20km, I eased off a bit and got caught at about 22km.

They all took on coffee at the turn around and offered me a head start on the return. I thought with 10 minutes I could make the turn back onto the rollers before the catch. I did stop to take a photo and got caught on the first climb after the turn. Then dropped my chain shifting onto the small ring. Flight stopped to wait and we finished the rollers together. Then she road home while I drove.

Great outing, especially with the rain holding off for us. A bit windy on the return.

Woke up to a 53 ready score, so slept for another 90 minutes to boost it to 62.

Note

I took a look at the official Ride to Conquer Cancer opening ceremonies and there were a lot of people crammed into a small space - kind of like a rock concert. Over $16 million raised this year.

Note

Rained out at the track after joining the Calgary club for the year. Went for coffee with the fast crew and it dried so we went bike...but my loaner bike was locked up. I played the role of first aid crew, in case someone crashed.

Went to bed on mountain time and woke up on eastern time. Not the ideal set up for mountain climbing.

Ride to Conquer Cancer part 1

I passed on the big group this year and opted for some climbing. First up Highwood Pass: the highest paved pass in the country. Road is closed until June 15, so lots of cyclists.

I had three different plans for the ride, depending on how I felt. I ended up just picking an easy gear and chugging up the hill. Not quite an Energizer Bunny, but maybe a Duracell turtle.

I was carrying the drone, but it was too windy to fly it. I noticed several times that I could be riding 20km/hr and my flags were still facing forward. I went a short way beyond the summit to see the view on the south side. I’ll have to ride it one day.

The descent side of the road was pretty beat up most of the way, so I contained my speed to avoid getting into trouble. I did push the little climbs on the descent a bit, knowing I didn’t have to worry about running out of gas.

Equipment note: the replacement rear bottle cage isn’t useable from the bike seat. Luckily, the bladder of spare water I squished in with the drone was much better on the trike than the stick bike, so I drank most of it.

Day 1 free weights

I got to today’s hotel early, choosing Mrs favourite hotel and dining room of the long trip over a shorter drive to Flight tomorrow. It meant I had time to attend to my mystery flat. I changed from hobbies to road tires while I was at it.

And, it appears I don’t gain a time zone tomorrow. My iPad and iPhone disagree on that.

Walk/hike warm up/down 44:00 [2] 5.5 km (8:00 / km)

Walked across town for dinner and tested the new Oura function to chart heart rate during certain types of activity.

Then did a spell in the giant hot tub that rarely gets used.

Sleep score back in the 90s

Oura gave me my worst sleep score ever at 53. I probably should have gotten up right away to verify that my passport was in the truck.

When I went to load the cross bike, it’s front was deflated and refused to take air with either of my pumps. I grabbed my last spare tube of that size from the basement so I could deal with it another time.

Stopped to visit a couple of Chicago friends who essentially self quarantined with their 5 year old (started at 3). Stayed a bit too late to clear Chicago tonight.
