Road cycle (Track loaner) 48:23 intensity: (1:17 @1) + (8:38 @2) + (7:49 @3) + (10:40 @4) + (19:59 @5) 18.22 km (2:39 / km)

Track day.

I brought my power pedals today so that I could get some metrics. I wanted to practice starts and set a new PB 2,000m.

Interval 1: warm up

Interval missing: set a strong effort I thought I could hold for 5 laps, then practiced some starts. 17 minutes

Interval 2: pretty much a repeat of the missing interval, but I don’t think I was quite as fast over 2,000m. Still, this is the PB of record

Interval 3: cool down with a couple of starts

Interval 4: some starts and some drops from the corner to build up leg speed. I did most of the day on the top of the bars, but tried a couple of starts in the drops. The power jump was noticeably higher in the drops. Set new PB for 1&2 second power. I know I could get more power off the line, especially with a bigger gear.

Promised rain held off to give the few of us who showed up excellent conditions.
12 PM

Road cycle 17:00 intensity: (7:00 @4) + (10:00 @5)

GPS off interval estimates. Write up in main report. Probably 7km.

Racing until 8 last night was not conducive to getting to sleep on time

Walk/hike warm up/down 57:00 [2] 5.4 km (10:33 / km)

Walk to and around Prince’s Island with Floght for a little Calgary memorial.

I went to scout out an island while Flight napped. Maybe not the best choice given the elevation changes before going to race with the C group at the track.

The river is fast and full.

Heart rate per the new Oura workout measure. Seems about right
6 PM

Road cycle (Track rental) 28:11 intensity: (5:30 @1) + (3:13 @2) + (3:17 @3) + (4:24 @4) + (11:47 @5) 8.29 km (3:24 / km) +6m 3:23 / km

Race night at the track

Interval 1: warm up, just getting a feel for the bank and making sure the bike was a reasonable fit
Interval missing: scratch race
Interval 2: chariot race, 1 lap from a standing start. I didn’t feel remotely comfortable being held on the slope so started from the rail, which was also uncomfortable, but at least in my control. It meant I was about 30m from the off. A lot for a 450m race. So...work on starts next time at the track.
Interval 3: avalanche. 11 laps with increasing points value for successive sprints. I pulled myself early because as upright as I need to sit to maintain blood flow was a huge penalty, especially in the wind. So I took myself out of other racers way.
Interval 4: reverse win and out. An interesting race in that if you win the first lap, you’re out of the race in 5th place. Winner of the 5th lap is in first place. I made sure the fast guys knew the rules before we lined up. As in all off the races, I seeded myself at the back. At corner 3, everyone slowed to not win. Enough so that I either had to press back on the pedals to slow or...see a gap from last through the field to guarantee myself 5th place. Seeing how slow they did the second lap, I could have waited for 4th place. The A group that was watching liked the move.

It was a fun, educational experience racing in a pack.

Rain is mostly gone, but it left some serious wind behind.
2 PM

Road cycle (Greenspeed ) 1:00:20 intensity: (16:00 @1) + (16:06 @2) + (8:36 @3) + (14:22 @4) + (5:16 @5) 15.05 km (4:01 / km) +123m 3:51 / km

It finally dried up so I went to explore a bit. Winds were too strong to want to be on a regular bike, so I took the trike.

It ended up being a contest of finding paths that were open. Some were closed for unstable slope, some were blocked with sand bags, some were under construction. What was open had enough debris that the slick tires spun out under power on the grades - steep in places.

Still, nice to get out after days of heavy rain.
