Short Sweet: This was the provincial road championship. Took 2nd (to Kailee) in Elite women's.
We lined up with the masters B men and Juniors men.
Many of the masters B mean are Cat 1/2 ie fast.
The juniors are the boys on the provincial team and national teams. Killer hill climbers
The race started in a hill with a fast pace.
I was guttered on the second turn which put me in a bad spot for the back end climb, I had to burn a few matches to chase back on but was lucky to be able to convince a fellow who had popped to chase with me as I was flying past him. We caught back on and Lampros let me in to the peloton for some draft. The other fellow popped off right away.
By this point Janelle was gone and it was just Kailee and I in the main group.
I stuck on until just before the end of the second lap then popped on the last back end climb.
The rain hits.
Hail hits.
I'm chasing but have to slow on the long decent because I can't see. It's raining too hard.
I pray for lightening.
It doesn't come.
I catch TJ. We ride together picking up the pace. I pull him for a bit then we start trading off pulls.
We catch K (one of the elite men who popped from his group) as we hit the back half of the third (of 4.5) lap. He comes around for a uick pull then elbow flicks, I pull back around to give TJ a bit more of a break and let him know I can't take pulls from him because I'm in podium contention, but he can take pulls off us. Then I look back for TJ to come around and see that he's gone.
Shit.
I'm told that K will cheer me on from behind but not pull so I don't get DQed. So I duck down and just go. within 2 min he's gone and I'm back to being all alone for the last 50k ish.
Which sucks.
Everyone I caught was in a different group.
It's super windy.
I try to find another match for the last lap by eating some caffeinated stuff. Which sort of works.
I finish strong in second place.
Janelle finished about 5min behind me. Lucky girl popped with a group of folks that she was able to work with for most of the race. She also worked with a group of men that she was not supposed to, but it didn't really affect results so we just let her know not to do it next time.
Feels a bit like a participation medal rather than a provincial win.
Racing with cat 1/2 men sucks.
