slept:5.5

Mussleman 1/2IM: We woke up at 5pm after not a great sleep but, I didn't think I'd have a good one. ate banana and 2 packets of oatmeal. Showered and felt fine. Woke to rain but it stopped just before we headed out.

Swimming race 39:56 [5] 2.0 km (19:58 / km)
ahr:166

Went out nice and easy and just tried to maintain a smooth pace. Lots of traffic as it was too laps with age waves ahead and behind us. Caught lots of weeds but was on course pretty good. Slow 100m walk from shore...
22/67 AG & 136/512 Finishers

Cycling race (Road) 2:56:32 [5] 90.0 km (1:58 / km)
ahr:151

Did a managed bike ride. Hard to get HR down for a long time as the first half of the course was uphills into a head wind. 1:28 ave HR was 155 higher than I wanted - but I felt good. Let the hammerheads go. Last 1:27 was more controlled at a 148 HR which is what I trained at and LOTS of guys with great bikes and wheels passed me. I felt great though except for the eating. Didn't really like the second 1/2 clif bar and didn't eat all of the 3rd 1/2 clif bar stomach felt a bit weird and although I seemed to be drinking and eating what I planned (although I switched from powerbars to clif bars and used the heed instead of my eload) I was happy to stop at the 70K mark as planned. I was excited getting off the bike knowing I had managed my bike pretty much as expected and was going to run down a bunch of the field. :)
40/65 AG & 200/512 Finishers
(not what I'm used to... but that's ok I was going to have a great run!)

Running race (Road/Rough Gravel/Hills) 1:53:31 [5] 21.1 km (5:23 / km)
ahr:156 shoes: Saucony Triumph 4

Well after a managed bike I managed to have a real crappy run!!! Started off slow as Coach Gordo suggested. Kept slowing down as HR remained pretty high at 155 or so. Hard to guage because the course had big hills. Legs kicked in at the top of the first set and I was passing a lot of runners and feeling good. I didn't drink anything for the first 2 miles as planned. began to relax and felt ok by the 4 mile mark and took gel (noticed it didn't go down easy and I was getting hot b/c temp was 82 degress) did some more hills and was starting to feel a bit sick. These are the hardest miles so I just did my best to plug away.

Got to the big hill (really rough gravel) and took it slow but, passed a few guys - everyone was taking it slow). Percussion group at the top motivated me but at the top it was wide open and I was baking. Took aid and carried on to the 7 mile mark. Drank again and it was about about the 8 mile mark I started feeling bad (sick to my stomach) There was no way I was going to take my gel as planned as I thought I would hurl. I decided right or wrong to skip the aid and wait for the 9 mile mark where I did take a drink again... more hills and I was really slowing down. People I had passed earlier on were now easily running by me. I walked for a minute then hit mile 10 and drank again.

It was down hill from there into the city and I felt better until I hit open area that goes under a tunnel. The stomach turned again and I was feeling pretty green. The last two miles were really long and awful and included 3 long walks as many runners passed and encouraged me to keep going. I ran the last 1/2 mile as best I could but, it wasn't pretty.

I have lots of questions and doubts after the race and hope to understand better what went wrong. My legs were pretty beat up. 6-7 blisters and my calfs were jumping like crazy then cramping like crazy after I finished. I felt pretty shitty.
26/65 AG & 156/512 Finishers

Note

T1: 1:34 and T2: 1:46. Didn't rush but didn't doddle... transitions went as planned.
Despite being an A race I got a C race result as feeling goes. Really disappointed in the run. I wanted to have a managed bike so I could feel great on the run. Imagine if I hammered the bike... yikes. I seriously went in thinking I be in at 5:10 or better if I felt good. I wasn't even close!Oh well, next time I will figure this thing out so I leave the race feeling better - I hope! Maverick who trained Placid the week before said this run course was WAY harder than the placid run for what it's worth.
