Adventure racing race (Castlewood 8 Hour) 8:43:45 [3] 35.77 mi (14:39 / mi) +2047ft 13:53 / mi
slept:5.0 shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Staying in St. Louis + 8 a.m. start made for a pretty good night's sleep for the night before a race.

Surprisingly cold race-morning. 20ish is plenty cold, even if it's 10* warmer than last year's start. Wore bike shorts under running tights, long-sleeved tech shirt under (new!) jersey, buff around neck, fleece hat, thin liner gloves. Two pair of socks - tall, thin wool under slightly thicker FIT socks. I was pretty cold at start but warmed up on initial run.

Trek 1: 1.5 mi, CP 1-3 27 min

We started all the way at the back. Ran from school on pavement and then flat gravel. Beginning run was hard for me; I was definitely feeling the previous two weeks' races. Mind was all about the race, body was all "this shit again?" Slowest person on the team. Got caught in bottleneck at CP2 with huge group of racers and only one working punch.

Paddle 1: 4.4 mi, CP 4-5; 1 hr

Paddling during winter makes me nervous bc of fear of tipping, but very uneventful paddle other than Luke first getting soaked by another team as they ran into us and then attempted to push away and then by Robby. Saw two bald eagles!

Bonus trek: 3.6 mi, CP 37-42; 1:25

(sidenote: silkychrome lists the distance for this leg as 1.5 mi, but 3.6 is what my GPS tracker gave. That's a huge difference.)

I don't have the maps in front of me, so I don't have the order we attacked in. Went clockwise if you were facing the river. Super flat terrain, made me a) wish I'd paid more attention at Creve Coeur last Sat. and b) glad Luke was navigating. Got the first pretty quickly, bobbled our attack for the next (looking for a trail that wasn't there). Luke caught it, we went back to our known point and decided to go for the next two that had clearer attack points and then shoot bearings to the two that were basically in the middle of nowhere. Success!

Paddle 2: 2 mi, CP 6, 29 min. Paddling is boring.

Bike 1: 6 mi, CP 7-14, 1:03

Fun Castlewood singletrack! Up Grotpeter, where I rode much better than I'd anticipated. Fairly confident. Strong on uphills. Still way slower than guys on flat or downhill. All CPs were right on trail.

Trek 3: 3.7 mi, CP 15-22, 1:46

Had to plot a few points, others were pre-plotted. Luke was dead on for all of these. Took clockwise route. Combination of bushwhacking and trails, but lots of up and over redline routing in later section, which I was all for. Felt strong on the climbs. Lots of cheating going on during this trek. SO many teams sending runners, one team running down Ries Rd., which was an illegal route choice. Probably a lot of newer teams who don't really understand the rules, but annoying all the same.

Bike 2: 15.1 mi, CP 23-26, 29, 31-34 1:58

My front wheel was losing air as we left TA, so we ended up stopping to change tire just after leaving park. A team caught up with us as we rode away from pit stop and asked if we'd waited to get 21 (I think) on bike instead of on trek. "No, that's illegal, it was a trekking point."

23-25 on road, nice pavement and some climbing. Felt strong. Then you could pick and choose. We were running short on time (and dead watch battery, ugh) so opted for the singletrack version. Lost a little time with approach to stinging nettle trails, ended up going to Sherman Beach trailhead and then doubling back, love those flat, flowy trails, though. I need to bring Jacob. He'd have a blast! Got 31-33, 26, debated riding up to get 29 but went for it bc it was so close. No time to ride out to 30, which was a bummer, got 34 and finished at 4:43 (17 min. before cutoff).

Was hoping maybe this was the year we'd clear the course, but left 3 CPs/5 points (30 was worth 3) out there. Great, fun race with some of my favorite people. No complaints from me about the day. Can't wait for the next one. That said, I'm also a little happy to have no race next weekend.

Trail running race (Skippo 30k) 3:47:03 [5] 18.6 mi (12:12 / mi) +1575ft 11:18 / mi
ahr:161 max:188 slept:5.0 shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Skippo PR on first 10K (1:04) and 20K (2:18). Feet started hurting at 8 miles, adjusted socks, shoes twice in second lap with little improvement. Third lap pretty much went to hell. I walked portions of some of the most runnable trail sections in the race.

Ran first 8 miles with Chuck, lost him after messing with my shoes, the rest pretty much alone and very grouchy. Not typical race feelings for me. If one of my November races is going to suck, though, I'll take this one as the bad one.
