Mountain biking (BT Epic) 7:22:33 [5] 49.0 mi (6.6 mph) +5367ft
shoes: Trek Xcaliber
Total time was 8:38. We were pretty efficient at CPs, so I think the majority of that time was a combination of pushing my bike uphill so slowly the Garmin didn't register movement and standing next to my bike trying to catch my breath.
Went into this with limited bike miles over the past month, some due to injury, some due to family stuff. Chuck was hoping for a sub-7 hour finish and I thought 8 was more realistic. I felt great for the first 10 miles, but after the first CP I was redlined on hills I've always been able to ride and that was pretty much the story of the next 40 miles. Much walking ensued. Handling and downhill-wise I felt more comfortable overall than in a long time/ever, as long as no real endurance was required. Very difficult race for me mentally. I knew it would be hard, but I've also raced long enough to know what I can expect from my body, and dying 10 miles in was not it.
Potential reasons:
1. 20 total miles since Oct 4 is not sufficient training.
2. 90 total miles since Sept. 6 is not sufficient training.
3. Those first 10 miles were definitely race pace for me, and I don't think I ate anything in that hour. Dug a hole I never really recovered from.
4. My body has been fighting a serious infection for a month.
5. Antibiotics may or may not have a detrimental effect on athletic performance.
No matter what the reason(s), it certainly gives me things to work on. Fueling, handling (so I can eat/drink on the move better), and more regular training (aka suck it up and ride solo at SIUE and on the roads if necessary).
