Clothing: started in l/s wool base layer, jersey, light wind jacket, wind gloves, shorts, knee warmers, knee socks over thin wool socks, reg bike shoes. Carried my waterproof jacket and put it on when the rain started falling in earnest. At halfway point, kept base layer, switched to a dry jersey, added my Berryman fleece jacket, topped with rain jacket. Buff over ears, fleece hat, lobster gloves. Switched out socks to a thicker pair of wool ones and put on fasterkatts. Glorious warm, dry feet. Pretty much nailed clothing for the day. Managed heat with zippers and while I got a little chilly at times I was never COLD.
On a day with good conditions, I think this was a much easier course than last year. We did not have good conditions. Pretty fast first 20 miles where I felt pretty good, followed by steady rain and some mild HAB. My rear brake was done by mile 45, but my front brake hung in there with some very mild slowing power til the midpoint.
Josh adjusted my front brake, which gave me 12 more miles of stopping power. The last 40 miles I was brakeless and scared to death to go down hills without the ability to stop or slow myself, so I walked any downhills that scared me (and there was a low bar for that criteria). First 52 miles took me 4:20, the second took me over 8. More HAB and peanut butter roads for much of the second half. It was really frustrating to have to walk hills I'd have ridden without thinking twice (or without braking) if I'd known I could stop if I had to. This race was really about gutting it out and getting myself across the finish line.
By comparison, last year's 107-mile version featured 5-7 miles of HAB and I finished in 9:30ish.
850 starters, 165 finishers. Craziness.
