 | Run (mostly trails) 51:00 [3] | |
| |
| early am. With map. Ice and snow below, rain above, me in between. |
 | Ski (Classic) 1:13:00 [2] | |
| |
| Grabbed skis that I knew had plenty of glister on them from a few coats added in January. But on snow I noticed there was no grip. It seems the glister was gone!? Evaporated? Eaten by hungry microbes? Eaten by hungry skis? I can't figure it out since the usual problem is not being able to get rid of the stuff. Went home added some more and accidentally caused a minor environmental disaster by applying a too hot iron to some Rode universal glister which is a lethal as Italian cheese. Luckily family was out so I did not have to evacuate. All this for a crappy ski in light rain. |
Saturday Mar 29 |
 | Bike (MTB-O) 1:32:00 [2] | |
| |
| Early morning. Drew a course on old phone book maps, which I thought would just be a pleasant distraction not real orienteering. Surprisingly the course turned out to be fairly interesting with route choice all along and a map lacking bike trails and new roads to add confusion. Lots of fun except when I almost ran over an old lady while looking at my map. |
 | Kicksled (lake ice) 37:00 [3] | |
| |
| While M skied and J snowshoed. On Jyväsjärvi 2.3 km track which is in great condition. Lots of happily families out on this sunny day. Skaters with poles dangling willy nilly were a bit of a hazard as always. Threw in some 200-400 meter bursts. With huge tail wind I was definitely over 35km/hr on the fast stretches. |
 | Run tempo (snow) 15:00 [3] | |
| |
| Right after kicking, did a fast-ish dash across the lake in my cleats. Feel like I need to get in more running if I am going to have any chance of running my 10km dream time in June. But with this lovely Spring weather there are so many other ways to play outside. |
 | Run hills (snowy trails) 1:03:00 [2] | |
| |
| PM. Dumb idea, the morning was enough. |
Friday Mar 28 |
 | Ski (skate) 1:05:00 [3] | |
| |
| yes! |
 | Snowshoe (jog/hike) 1:20:00 [2] | |
| |
| Kind of a replacement for a leg strength workout. Didn't mean it to last this long but sort of hard to gauge how long it would take to do a loop through Laajavuori. Legs rubbery at the end.
If this sunny weather continues it may be time for an annual rite: the ski in shorts and t-shirt. Although not unusual among skiers in my home state it has good shock value here. Jaws drop, heads shake and some old people look really pissed off. I suppose it is the equivalent of orienteering in your speedo. |
Thursday Mar 27 |
 | Ski (classic) 1:45:00 [2] | |
| |
| Palokka to Ampujien maja and back with Erwin. Had to stop regularly to scrape the fresh snow off our skis. Slow-going but otherwise enjoyable. Again the locals seemed to be staying home. |
Wednesday Mar 26 |
 | Ski (classic) 1:43:00 [2] | |
| |
| After a stressful drive back to Jyväskylä in a big snow storm, sometimes near white-out conditions. The upside when I got home was good old fashioned skiing, making our own tracks as we went. About 15-20 cm new snow. Funny that the usually crowded tracks here in a major Finnish skiing city were empty except for one American and a Flemish guy. Have the locals been spoiled by grooming machines? Well, all the better for us to have the trails to ourselves. |
Tuesday Mar 25 |
 | Orienteer 1:13:00 [2] | |
| |
| Last training in Ahvenanmaa (Tranvik). More snow but maybe that is good as it erased the signs of all others who had visited the controls already. This was more like the usual stuff in Central Finland. Looked FOREVER for one control on open rock only to realise the ribbon had been knocked to the ground. Amazed on leaving to see the young Russians jogging to the same map from their lodging 8-10km away!!
This was an interesting Easter holiday. A few amazing terrains and amazing mistakes but best of all was a lot of time in the pool and on slide with Marilla! She also did a bit of "orienteering " with Mom, requiring one rescue. Ready to go home and ski on all this new snow coming.

Monday Mar 24 |
 | Orienteer 1:30:00 [2] | |
| |
| Challenging and fun, even with the extra snow. |
 | Run 20:00 [1] | |

Sunday Mar 23 |
 | Orienteer 1:10:00 [2] | |
| |
| "iltarasti" in the morning? Other side of Daglösa. Wonderful terrain again but I mostly walked/jogged and still seemed to be way off on half the controls...Jeez must have been last, even on this easier course. This is like my first days orienteering all over again. Decided to take the evening night-O training more seriously... |

 | Run warm up/down 30:00 [1] | |
| |
| |
 | Orienteer (night) 53:00 [4] | |
| |
| Shoot, a little more snow. Ran harder but not much of a training when you get sucked into the paths through the snow. Still tried to do my own routes in the first few controls, with a Russian behind me, and obviously I lost time trying to take a route just because it is different not better. He picked the wrong guy to follow. After that I joined the train. |
Saturday Mar 22 |
 | Orienteer 3:00:00 [2] | |
| |
| 3 trainings (too much). Daglösa Itä was the highlight. DEAD tired. |
 | Run warm up/down 30:00 [1] | |

| Getting from place to place. |
Friday Mar 21 |
 | Orienteer 1:30:00 [3] | |
| |
| Ahvenanmaa. Oh, snow... |
Thursday Mar 20 |
 | Note | |
| (rest day) |
| Travel day. Really tired from drive down to Turku and poor sleep yesterday so decided not to use the evening for anything except reading to M. Off to Ahvenanmaa in the morning. Hope to get in some orienteering, but primarily lots of playing in the pool with M and J. Stopped at Suunnistajan Kauppa for some new shoes and made a risky switch of loyalties from Jalas Blacks which fit but need regular repair to VJ Integrators in an ugly color (my first hand me down O-shoes where Integrators). Let's see how they compare...M also insisted on the purchase one of those little o-flags which people hang from their rear view mirrors. I don't feel yet enough of an orienteer to make such a bold statement. |
Wednesday Mar 19 |
 | Ski (skate) 1:09:00 [3] | |

| Afternoon and the sun is out! Warm up and a fairly good tempo after the intervals. |

| morning |
 | Ski intervals (skate) 24:00 [5] | |
| |
| 6x4. The wrong choice of ski, plus some downhills, kept me from doing these at 100%--hard to find a rhythm when your skis are glued to the snow. So did a lot of double-poling. But still really enjoyed these. Actually had only thought to do four but felt good enough for more. |
 | Run warm up/down (road) 16:00 [1] | |
| |
| Warm down right after skiing. Trying to fool my legs into thinking they had run the intervals. |
 | Run warm up/down (treadmill) 15:00 [3] | |
| |
| Noon at Aalto Alvari with M and J. |
 | Strength (plyometrics & core) 25:00 [1] | |
| |
| Jumping around on and off a box. Marilla found it pretty funny. As did a guy who suggested I should save some money and just run up Laajavuori. He has a point. Followed by slip and slide in the pool with M and J. M gulped some pool water early on and said it was time for the sauna. |
 | Run (mostly trails/ night) 1:03:00 [1] | |

Saturday Mar 15 |
 | Bike (MTB w/ winter tires) 1:17:00 [2] | |
| |
| Training "triathlon" Part 1: started at 7.30am in the snow which stuck to the rear cogs and the last 3 or 4 k's I couldn't change gears. Had intended this part be with a map but too lazy to put on the map holder and draw a course. |
 | Orienteer (street) 1:04:00 [2] | |
| |
| Part 2: Change of clothes and off. Luckily Marilla and Julia were still sleeping so no requests to read books before I ran off. This was a reprise of Thursday's training, just tried different route choices. |
 | Ski (skate) 1:05:00 [3] | |
| |
| Part 3: Tracks in good shape today thanks to a women-only ski event in Laajavuori. It seems men were allowed in the vicinity, just not the priviledge of paying money for...what? To do what everyone usually does for free it seems. Maybe there is a t-shirt involved. Skiing felt good and cranked it up a little in the middle, following behind a racer out doing what for him was probably just an easier workout. Dropped off when I realised I was being annoying by "racing" him. Overall a nice long workout, first of its kind this winter sadly. Started thinking it might be fun to do a one-day adventure race this summer if Vesa is interested. Now I might even be allowed to do some of the navigating... |
 | Stretch (passive) 10:00 [0] | |

| Cut short by Marilla and The Cat in the Hat. |
Friday Mar 14 |

 | Orienteer race (night) 50:00 [5] | |

| On my home map. Led wasn't enough in the forest. Made one 4 min. mistake towards the end where I couldn't see a thing. Surprised to get caught by some old guys and was really pooped at the end. |

Sunday Mar 9 |
 | Ski-O race 1:20:00 [4] | |
| |
| Kaipola (Jämsä). First four controls ok but a little fall on the way to 6 and then an old guy went down in front of me on a twisty downhill on which I guess many took their skis off and ran down. Well I just missed hitting the guy but caught my ski on something, went down and cracked a piece on the right binding. It was hard work just getting back to the race centre with a half-broken ski--all double-poling since any skating caused my boot to come out of the binding. Actually a fairly decent workout but an ugly ending to my 3rd (and final?) ski-o experience. Not sure this version of orienteering suites me--would rather be skiing classic in a long race. |
 | Ski (skate) 52:00 [2] | |
| |
| PM Doddle around the usual loops. |
Saturday Mar 8 |
 | Kicksled warm up/down 15:00 [1] | |
| |
| |
 | Kicksled race (World Championships) 32:00 [5] | |
| |
| WC in Multia. Missed the 200m event. Anchored the relay (3x500m) where I got overtaken near the line for silver, so another bronze for KENSU. Then the 2000m where I had an incredibly bad start getting stuck behind some Dutch guys. Passed several guys to get 4th place--of which I have collected many in past years. Perhaps could have got a medal if I had been smarter at the start. This year, because of bad ice conditions, the marathon was also moved from Sunday to Saturday. The "marathon" also got shortened at the last minute to an 11k xc race since the ice had too much water in spots. Here it was impossible to pretend I am in better shape than I am, and I finished in 7th behind several guys who have never beat me in the old days when I actually trained and didn't goof around orienteering. There was a hairy downhill mid-course that provided some thrills. Now my legs are absolutely dead and I wonder if I can do the ski-o race tomorrow... |
Friday Mar 7 |

Thursday Mar 6 |

 | Orienteer warm up/down (night) 42:00 [3] | |
| |
| Nenäiniemi AV-practice. Mind still half on work. Went wrong way on first butterfly and it was downhill from there. Ended up skipping one control to make it back to work in time. In the coming opportunities to orienteer I really need to work on formulating a plan for every control. |

 | Orienteer (street-forest mix) 1:08:00 [3] | |
| |
| Two trainings in Vaajakoski I missed earlier because of a cold. Heavy going in the snow in the forest but tried to stay in the forest so it felt like orienteering. |
 | Ski (classic) 1:07:00 [2] | |
| |
| Straight from trainings to ski tracks in Vaajakoski. Turns out the Jyväskieppi ski race was being held in Huhtasuo. Several friends shot by with smiles on their faces, enjoying the competition and Spring weather. Shoot, I would have pinned on a number too had I noticed it was today. |
