Orienteering race 1:30:00 [3] **** 8.4 mi (10:43 / mi) +414m 9:18 / mi
18c

It took a second getting my bearing going to 1, I'll attribute it to the 1:10,000 map after doing several sprints on 1:5,000 maps. No trouble with 2. Went to wrong bend in creek for 3 and had to search around for it. Spiked 4 and 5.

Hesitated on the way to 6 in grass, looking for trailhead into forest. Never found it and slowly picked my way through, came across it with a bit of luck. To 7, I missed a trail and fence crossing, and came all the way to the ridge behind control, took a moment to figure out where I was, the followed ditch down to control. Could have avoided the problem if I read the contour lines clearly the first time around.

I went almost straight to 8, contouring slightly around a hill. Got to a rock pile matching the one on the map but no flag. Spend a long time searching in vicinity before I heard Aaron climbing up the hill to 9 behind me, realized I overshot it. After reading Mike's log, I think I was in the right place the first time.

Finally got into a groove on 9-13, using trails, fences and streams for navigation. 14 and 15 I relied on the compass heavily. Navigation was straightforward but need some practice to get faster at it.

17 I switched plans from taking the trail halfway through and ended up wasting time looking for it too soon. Took a good route to 18 next, contoured around hill and came out the the forest just before the creek crossing.

Happy with my run, especially for regrouping after a rough 6, 7, 8. Before I went out, Ben told me it's "a pretty gnarly course." and he wasn't kidding!
