Orienteering race 34:55 [4] 5.0 km (6:59 / km)

NZ Nationals Relay Kura Tawhiti 3.9Km 240m

Sent out in the lead with Carsten and Cameron Tier about 40 sec behind. First part went very well. Completely in control, and feeling fine. Maintained the gap to Carsten, but then got onto the long climb and he caught me fairly easily. He then got away 14-15 when I attempted to get across bare rock that was too steep and had to back out. Very slow on the contouring leg after that - have done none of this type of running in 18 months and just can't cope with steepness at the moment.

Lost a few seconds to 18 when I came off a path by accident in the rocks. On the leg to 19 took a long route round as I didn't see that there was a single small section of crag marked passable. Otherwise good and felt pretty strong most of the way - just don't have Carsten's speed when it comes down to pure running.

Overall very happy with the weekend. Didn't go into it with much in the way of expectations but obviously exceeded any that I had. The last few weeks work appears to have paid off and I'm on track for the event I'm actually sort of aiming at - the British Champs (long). Relatively confident with the knee, though it's obviously still affecting me a bit on rougher / steeper terrain.

Orienteering 1:09:25 [3] 9.0 km (7:43 / km)

NZ Nationals Long M35 7.985Km 410m

A bit tired after yesterday and a serious race in the relay tomorrow, so took this very gently and concentrated on the navigation.

Generally very smooth and no problem at all with the knee. A couple of dodgy route choices 2-3 and 3-4, but probably wise to be keeping out of steep terrain when possible at the moment. Lost a bit of time 6-7 as not sure how high I was on the small path before the control so played it safe. Very enjoyable terrain and would have preferred to be in a serious race.

Orienteering race 43:53 [4] 6.0 km (7:19 / km)

NZ Nationals Middle Tuhaitara 5.25Km

Bit of a struggle. Found it really difficult to read the map without stopping completely and not that easy even then. As a result, was navigating mainly off vegetation rather than contours which meant that everything was a bit scrappy as most of the time I didn't have a mental picture of the control in advance.

Also felt pretty tired during the second half. A combination of lack of terrain running and running fairly early in the morning. Knee a bit sore once or twice and was fairly defensive running off dunes.

2 fairly significant 75-90 sec mistakes (8 and 22) and numerous small time losses. Jamie caught me 2 mins at 8 and we were together-ish all the way to 22, not helping each other much!

Orienteering race 18:32 [4] 4.0 km (4:38 / km)

NZ Nationals Sprint Ferrymead Park 2.8Km

Pretty good run. Started fairly hard as had James Bradshaw and Carsten 1 and 2 minutes after me and wanted to keep them behind as long as possible. The brain was in gear right from the word go and went well through the first part of the course. Lost time 8-9 through not spotting that there was no gap in a hedge. A few seconds lost 18-19 when I went the wrong side of a train. Otherwise pretty much faultless, which I knew was likely to be pretty good in that type of race. Physically felt good, and was able to raise the tempo over the last few legs when the navigation got a bit simpler. Didn't feel the knee at all during the race (though a bit sore after driving to Springfield in the evening).

So, a pretty satisfying run. But even though I knew it was my sort of course, I could never have expected a result like that. Felt a bit like that Australian that won a speed skating gold through being behind the rest of the field when they all took each other out.

Still, it completes lots of gaps in the CV. And one record that I suspect might never be equalled - I've now been lucky enough to win long distance, middle distance and sprint distance national elite titles by a single second!

Commiserations to Karl who was on the wrong side of that result, and much respect to Matt, who ran the course in more like the sort of time it should have been run in, but had the honesty to own up to transgressing the rules.

Running 45:24 [3] 9.0 km (5:03 / km)
shoes: Saucony

The extended Avro - Avian loop.

Legs feeling fairly tired up Avro, so going fairly gently. Sped up a bit and was going quite well down the hill at the end, but legs feel like they've done a bit of work recently. Knee almost no problem at all.
