Running 34:13 [3] 8.0 km (4:17 / km)
shoes: Saucony

From Riverdale Rd - short lap of part of Endcliffe Park, then reverse of the usual loop via Bingham Park Pitch & Putt to Forge Dam.

Would have been a rest day if it wasn't for the flight tomorrow. Legs very tired for the first part of the run, but got involved in a bit of a race towards the end and ran the last 10 minutes pretty hard. Felt better once running hard.

Rogaine race 1:52:50 [3] 20.0 km (5:39 / km)
shoes: Saucony

Rogaine type race from the top of the hill near Charlie's house with Simon M.

Planned for bikes as well as runners so there was quite a bit of road runnning. Some really nice footpaths as well though. We got all but 3 controls without trying too hard. Legs too tired to really try hard anyhow - felt tired right from the start and only really improved in the last 30 minutes when I was starting to feel a bit stronger. Great evening.

Orienteering race 35:51 [4] 6.0 km (5:59 / km)

BOC Relay - Holmbury Hill 5.6K 190m

Running 3rd leg with Chappers 1st and Martin 2nd. They both did a good job so that when I started I had what I thought was a lead of about 3 minutes. Knew I didn't have to push too hard and promptly missed the first control. Looked easy, but I ran across the gully it was in (probably only 10 metres from the control) and didn't think it was a mapped feature. Probably lost nearly a minute. Not a great start. After that just a few seconds lost at 5 where there were 2 vague bumps wghich could have been the required knoll and I picked the wrong one to look at first.

Thereafter very clean. Physically, felt tired before I set out, but OK once running. Gradually improved and over the second half of the course, really running quite well, albeit not at absolute maximum given the race situation. Much better than yesterday.

SYO 2 ended up second, quite a long way down.

Orienteering race 1:05:39 [5] 12.0 km (5:28 / km)

British Champs - Winterfold 10.1K 370m

Possibly the worst preparation I've had for a big race
- no idea whether I'd recovered from the past week's illness.
- the stress of being delayed for an hour on the M25 en route to the race (arriving about 35 mins before start time).
- guts playing up again. Feeling pretty bad right up to the start.

Started off and didn't feel great right away. Had forgotten that the terrain was actually quite tough here (bilberries) so changed route choice 1-2 and took a long road route. Slightly slower but meant I'd planned everything up to no. 10 by the time I'd reached 2. Good until 6, but then a silly mistake on the way to 7 where I missed a crossing point which was not as visible as expected and turned the wrong way along a track. Lost just over a minute. Consequently lost 15s to 8 as not in control, and also lost time at 9 (though lots of others did as well thanks to a drinks point being overprinted on top of detail just before the control).

The long route to the right 9-10 was probably the right one for me - all tracks and no severe climbs.

Missed 13 a bit - came off a track without noticing and struggled with the forestry work.

A bit out of control going into 16 and then lost confidence on the way to 17 and lost 45 sec.

Physically didn't feel great so was putting maximum effort in a lot of the time to try to compensate - getting very tired by the end and hence the problem on 17. Guts didn't feel right the whole way, but never got worse.

Not a satsfying run - should be mistake free on something like this. Pleased with the level of effort though - didn't leave anything out there.

Note

Longest night's sleep for a long time. Still feeling very weak in the morning but improved during the day. Doesn't seem to be a cold so might be OK for the weekend.

Had to miss this evening's orienteering though, which was supposed to be part of the preparation.

Running 39:54 [2] 7.0 km (5:42 / km)
shoes: Saucony

From Riverdale Rd, up Clough to Forge Dam, up the footpath through the fields to the Road, then back via usual route (Bingham Park Pitch & Putt).

Had felt pretty ropey all day and went out to try to find out whether there was really something wrong with me. There was. No strength at all - unable to put any effort in and in real difficulty any time there was a slope. Didn't seem to get worse while running but felt terrible afterwards. Barely able to walk upstairs and collapsed into bed much earlier than usual

Not looking good for this weekend.
