Hike with Max to the Vordere Glaernisch from the E end of the Kloentalersee (Bus Stop). Fabulous hike. All up and steep in places after a 1/2 hour mellow up hike to Schwamm Hoehe. Afterwards 3 hrs continuous steep climb. Encountered 30 or so sheep, the remains of a herd of about 200 who ventured from the very high pasture to the lower snowfield for water. Three spots with chains for security. Otherwise pleasant trail. Spent about 1/2 hour eating lunch looking down (almost vertically) to Glarus and around the Alpen panorama. We were asked to each carry a "shiitli" to the top for the National Swiss Day Hoehenfeurer (fire on top of the Mountain), which we gladly obliged to.
The descent took us 2.5 hours. The last 1/2 hour was getting quite hot.
A super hike. I wish I could do one of these every week.
For a perspective: The horizontal distance from the peak to the center of Glarus is 2.5 km, the vertical difference is 1850 meters. Obviously straight line travel is not recommended.
