Loco Harborside Half Marathon in Newburyport. I did not feel particularly prepared for this race - busy work kept me sitting a lot and it being just 2 weeks after a marathon, I was afraid my legs would be heavy. Three years ago, I did the same race 3 weeks after the marathon, and I had a 1:29:+ finishing time. So I hoped for a sub 1:30, 1:28 would perhaps be the unrealistic optimistic projection.
But alas, I had a good race! It was cold (35 with Ocean breeze) at the start which is good for running. I started out at a 6:35 ish pace for the first 2 flat miles. I seemed to be at the end of a group of youngsters, some of whom I passed after a 2-hill sequence around 4.5 miles. Then I was trading places with a guy named Scott (in blue) and eventually got passed by a short guy. So I was with people for most of the race, which surely helped to up the speed a bit. So I was able to maintain a < 6:40 mile to the end. (mile 13 pace was 6:22 with a bit of a downhill).
I feel good about this result. I was not too thrashed afterwards, and legs are only mildly sore. Could be my second or third fastest in the 12 + years since I have been doing these half marathons. I did again win my age class (60+), but there was a 66 yr old only 2 minutes behind. It was a large turnout, more competitive, with most runners from the South (MA, mostly) as the locals were running the Seacoast Half in Portsmouth which also happened today. (after seeing results: I was 20th overall - 870 runners.)
