Manchester City Marathon - it's a toughy!
Slower time than I expected but explainable (sun, gravely rail trail, and some late steep hills), plus I battled calf cramping after mile 19 - I wasn't the only one.
I had expected the Goffstown rail trail to be paved and/or smoothed packed dirt. Well for the most part it was not smooth, but wavy. That, and ever so slight incline on the way to the turn around (miles 16 - 19) took a lot of energy. Then, with the sun and temperatures climbing (60 - 70 degrees) I started having slight cramping in the left leg. So I had to go into lower gear, so that I did not aggravate it. My cramping episodes and my stopping at the aid stations are clearly visible on my pace profile.
In the end, it could have been a lot worse. I made it ok through the first half that had a lot of climb. I enjoyed the scenery, And although I had studied the course map, it is still nicer to run a new route than one that you are familiar with and know all the tough spots beforehand.
Another bonus: I ended up trading places throughout the race with a guy, who ended up being a neighbor 1/2 km down the road from me. Both, he and his wife ran the marathon. There may be some "socializing" running in the works...
I was first in my age class - really nobody around. Also beat the M60 - 64s, and was just behind # 2 of M55-59. Overall 77th out of 388 finishing.
