Running long 1:48:03 [3] 20.56 km (5:15 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 212 2013

Tried a different route for my long run, adding on a bit of distance in the middle rather than the end. Worked out pretty good, came out right around what I wanted. Felt kinda slow, but I did log quite a few miles this weekend.

Nordic Ski intervals 1:01:16 [5] 11.58 km (5:17 / km)
shoes: Atomic ski boots

Did some ski intervals today because I'll be missing the NLZ intervals this week with my trip to Sweden. The snow was super warm so I felt slow the entire time. Might also have something to do with how long I trained yesterday.

Note

101.24 kms this week, some of those are ski'ed but still feels pretty awesome

Nordic Ski 1:31:51 [3] 18.75 km (4:54 / km)
shoes: Atomic ski boots

It was snowing really hard today and I didn't have any eye protection with me, oh well.

A lot more of the farm was opened up for skiing, and the grooming was also very nice today, despite the inch or two of loose snow on top.

I spent about 3-5k without poles to work on my skating technique, most of it was uphill so I'm really feeling it writing this.

Running intervals 1:18:43 [5] 14.27 km (5:31 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel-1170

Slowing myself down is really becoming a theme for my time in Switzerland. Today's interval session was 'pendellauf', or 6x(2x2'). If that doesn't have any meaning to you, don't worry, it didn't to me either. From what I understood at the beginning of the sesh, it sounded like we were running the same stretch out and back, 2 minutes each. The detail that I missed was that the break between each out and back was only 5-10 seconds.

The first interval I really booked it, because I was only expecting 2 minutes of exertion and then a nice break. Boy was I taken by surprise when everyone turned around at the end and almost immediately started booking it again. Once again, should've taken it slow and just rolled with what's going on, literally the exact mistake I made last week.

Definitely not having any expectations of leading any sort of pack next time, I am just going to latch on to someone my speed and rolling with him.

Orienteering 1:42:37 [3] 11.92 km (8:37 / km)
shoes: VJ Bold

Night training while it snowed. It was really foggy in the forest and I for the first time used a proper bright lamp, took some getting used to. Got three maps, two were variations of the same loop, and the third was a timed sprint, part of a sprint cup series.

I started too quickly again. These trainings are to practice the little things, to build up the habits so they happen automatically in a race. For some reason I'm always rushing these trainings like I have something to prove. From now on I should focus on taking it slow and practicing good orienteering, especially in a night setting like this, and like most of the trainings are probably gonna be.

I messed up the first control. I left the trail too early and had to fight through the green slash and cross a river in the process. I found the control no problem, I just took a bit longer than necessary. 2-5 were alright, but only barely. I could have gone slower to really practice doing everything right, like thumbing along properly, reading ahead, knowing what the circle looks like, and having an exit before getting to the control, but I got carried away when Riccardo Rancan caught up to me at 4. I proceeded to speed up and completely messed up my exit from 5, and had no clue what I was doing to 6. I pulled myself back together again after 6, but I should have just gone slower at the beginning.

The second loop was better. I wasn't rushing myself as much and started focusing more on the process. It helped that there wasn't anybody around me for most of it, emphasized by me completely screwing up the finish when I was running near someone else. Started rushing again and stopped orienteering.

I was frustrated by the time I started the sprint, and due to the snow and barely above freezing temperatures, my hands were wet and borderline frozen. I didn't put much effort into the sprint, but I managed to complete it without problems. By then I had gotten the hang again of night orienteering so things were happening smoothly.

Next Wednesday I'm slowing down.
