Sid Richardson Spring O Meet, Day 1. Noam Ravid set a really nice Green course that made it fun to run terrain I thought I knew quite well. Lots of variety in leg length, speed and complexity, and the control features were all distinct and fair. He even managed to find a scenic overlook for the start! I read the map very well and kept a steady pace between controls, outnavigating one JROTC commander and outrunning another. :-)

What he couldn't control, however, was the weather. It had been raining for hours by the time the 12 noon start came along. And the mud and rocks a Sid make it pretty slippery when wet.

At point 4 or 5, I'd just punched at the base of a small cliff in a steep nest of rocks. As I pushed off to continue uphill, my feet went out from under me, and my right side came down heavily on a sharp, squared-off corner of the cliff. It was a painful shock and it must have shown on my face. Major V asked if I was OK -- yeah, I joked, but that's gonna leave a mark. And off we went.

By the end of the run, my side was starting to really tighten up, so I iced immediately afterwards and downed some Vitamin I. But it got sore right away and I had a tough time falling asleep that night.

Spike and Mary came down from KC for the non-TJOC Sid experience. They shared a cabin with us, and we played a Mongolian game with sheep ankle bones, enjoyed a round of Peep jousting, and watched part of a '50s "classic" movie called "The Vikings." (Odiiiiiiin!)

walking 30:00 [2]2.25 mi (13:19 / mi)
shoes: Gel Cumulus (3/06)
Brisk hill-walking. Decided to give the shins a break, since they're doing well and I ran hard (for me) yesterday.

Tuesday Mar 14

running 38:00 [3]3.25 mi (11:41 / mi)
Hill route, and I was surprised that it felt pretty good. During my long run on Sunday, I was seriously questioning whether I had another half marathon in me right now (week from Saturday). But maybe I do.

Monday Mar 13

Note
(rest day)
Recovery.

Sunday Mar 12

running long 1:40:00 [3]6.5 mi (15:23 / mi)
shoes: Gel Cumulus (3/06)
Heart of Texas Regatta in Austin -- Tom rowed, and I went for a long run along Town Lake. It was hot and I got very sunburned. Time includes some longer walk breaks to enjoy views from bridges. Austin rocks.
