Event: West Point A meet

West Point Meet, Day 1
Don't you hate it when you mess up early? It's like the whole race is a moot point. I spent 30 minutes looking for Control 2 -- I just hadn't gone far enough. I don't run often on 1:15000, and even though I tried to remind myself to keep going, my inclination was to stop too soon. So I just kept reattacking and reattacking a point about, oh, 100m from the actual control. Ellen told me that she and Mairead had trouble with the same control, so that made me feel a little better.

Once I got past that and internalized that little lesson, the rest of the course went much better. Lots of side sloping running, but I made good route choices. Just bobbled the second-to-last control by walking by the boulder on the wrong side. Three or four times. [Sigh]

If only I had a timeturner, like in Harry Potter -- I would go back and fix some of those dumb mistakes.

I wasn't planning on running this -- a brisk walk seemed like enough. But then Janet Tryson went trotting by me and that made me want to at least keep up! (Thanks, Janet!) The hills were a killer, though. Totally out of gas.

On Hensley's advice, we went in to Beacon for dinner -- had great pizza at Brother's Trattoria. (Sometime we'll go to the DIA, too.)

Friday May 5

Surebridge Map, Harriman State Park
Did some map running/walking, finding some specific points, to get into the map a little more. Fun terrain, but so many hills. Plus, I seem to have developed a bit of rock phobia since my fall in March.

We then met up with my friend and former colleague Hensley, who lives in a cozy little spot in Rosendale. Enjoyed relaxing on her deck, then went into New Paltz for dinner at La Statione (excellent Italian).

Took an afternoon road trip up into Catskills Park. Started up the Overlook Mountain Trail, then decided 1,300 ft of climb over 1.5 miles was probably not a good idea. We then walked around Woodstock for a bit, went into stores redolent of incense. (I did, anyway. Tom waited outside.)

Tom and I did some map training -- examining features and how they were mapped to get a feel once again for this very different terrain (and mapping style) for us. We're not used to so much unmapped rock.

Ran/walked (3:1) at White Rock Lake over the new bridges at the north end. Amazing to see a city park actually do something that makes so much sense. Anyway, it was already a bit hot for my liking at 9:30 a.m. Although I am no longer officially injured, I still have some side pain when running. But it's tolerable -- it doesn't hurt any worse than shin splints or a side cramp. So, maybe it will be with me for a long time. Don't know.
