Gariep Dam A1 Series race with Addicted 2 Adventure, Thinus, Jolene & Gawie.

I was sick leading up to the race so wasn't expecting to be strong and made sure we didn't push it too hard.

11km hike - we did the point in reverse like most teams, finishing behind the competitive teams near front of second pack of teams. Awesome sunrise as we started up the first koppie.

76km bike - fresh start, nav went well most of the way, but i could feel my chest getting tighter and i was pushing the pace, but kept up the effort anyway. Thinus punctured and it wasn't sealing after the first bomb, eventually we realised that he actually had a tube in, spare tube was the wrong valve, and time was passing by, almost sent Thinus home, but thankfully got a spare, started up again and puncture with 20km to go, used us all remaining bomb to get to end of the cycle, losing plenty of time. And then missing the paddle cut-off by 10min.

10km paddle - we got told to read our race book and it indicated that we split (2 to hike to first CP and 2 to paddle), not sure what we would have done otherwise... Windy slow paddle, and i was getting cold by the end, around 4pm or so. I've always wanted to paddle on Gariep and that was cool. We took a while to start the next leg after being so cold. We had lost out to Buco and PE as they made the paddle cutoff.

7km hike - road hike, great scenery and sunset, easy nav.

52km bike - cold, cold, cold. My chest was really tight and i coughed a lot so slowed the team down, my nav was good most of the way, but I was suffering to keep up and really cold so over shot the turn towards the R58 by 2/3km so lost a bit of time here.

11km hike - we started out going off course but found the right route and made our way up to CP26, taking time to commit to climbing up to the beacon as if it was wrong would have waste loads of time, long slog back to camp, but thankfully the hiking was not that cold.

52km bike - very cold start, all the layers on. Bad nav error at the first split of the jeep track, hit the fence and team around us convinced us it was the right fence but it was too early, followed the track along the wrong fence for a long way going in the right direction, track go worse and was about to drop over rough terrain, turned back and found the correct track. Group nav killed us. Then i broke a spoke and popped a seal and we stopped to put a tire in. By this time our full course was over and the sun was coming up. Rode into the Norvalspont to abseil and collect last few CP's, on abseil Gawie slip and hurt his wrist badly, he cycled 5km and at the Norvalspont pub withdrew. We finished the cycle just before cutoff and decline to climb the koppie on a very short last hike.

Sugars we the best that they have been at an AR of this length, got my long acting right, and pack some good food that i was ale to eat and enjoy.

Loads of admin, but great race that I really enjoyed. Looking forward to the next one. Keen for Vasbyt A1 now.
