Strength/flexibility (Base 27) 11:00 [2]
slept:2.0 weight:200lbs

It sucks when work is so intense that there's no time to work out. And it really sucks when dinner is so late that it subtracts from sleep time. The Nugget didn't have west tower rooms, and the room they gave me was next to the railroad tracks on the 12th floor. Our favorite shunter decided to start shuffling railroad cars around at 2 am, and of course he's obliged to honk every time he moves. This guy was some kind of musician, banging away at the horn and the cars in a frenzied cacophony until about 5 am. !@#$%^

Trail (Las Trampas south ridge) 1:02:00 [3] 4.0 mi (15:30 / mi) +200m 13:25 / mi
slept:6.0 weight:200lbs

Overcast, cooler - 48 degrees. Las Trampas on the south side has some great views from the top. Borders on Alameda watershed, but need a permit to go on that land. Looks nice over there.

One deer today, and many many cows. Mostly with young'uns. They sure keep the grass looking like a well kept lawn. Weird thing: I saw a calf eating a tree!!!! Small tree, but still a tree. Now it's even smaller. I've never seen a cow eat a tree before. It couldn't have been too hungry, because the entire place is a grazing mecca. Hmph.

No birds today - do they stop flying when a storm is coming in?

Route went from end lot up the trail to the top, southwest along the ridge, then back down on the trail just below the ridge. Very steep going up.

Trail (Briones crest) 2:12:00 [3] 8.57 mi (15:24 / mi) +250m 14:07 / mi
slept:8.0 weight:200lbs

Another beautiful day, 70 degrees. Got a call from the plant at 4 am - computers crashed. Couldn't fix it by 6 am, so put the plant in safe mode and will fix it on Monday - Scramnet problem, most likely.

Measured the crest trail with Malcolm's distance thingy. It's 1.5 mi to the first gate, 2.5 mi to the top, 3.3 mi to the top of no-name trail and 4.2 mi to the junction of Crest and Lafayette trails, 8mi to Reliez Valley.

'pon closer examination, there are still some yellow wildflowers and some blue&white wildflowers, all of them are about 0.5 inch diameter. Grass is short - ideal orienteering terrain right now, except for the steepness.

Trail (Briones crest) 2:20:00 [3] 8.57 mi (16:20 / mi) +250m 14:59 / mi
slept:9.0 weight:200lbs

Beautiful day. Sunshine and 70 degrees. Came across 6 or 8 big turkeys... out huntin for s'fox? They have to run about 15 yards before they launch into flight, and then they sound like they bash into branches as they fly. Probably want to stay below the tree tops so the turkey buzzards and hawks don't see them. They make a big noise with their feet in the leaves as they launch, and more as they land. So there's all this noise and shuffling going on, then suddenly it stops... all at once. Wonder how they communicate the "freeze" command. I didn't hear a single peep out of them. And what's that weird thing hanging under their necks for?

Man there were some whopper mudslides in Briones.

Only small wildflowers left now - the half inch teeny bright mauve ones. Didn't see a single California poppy.

Met the new neighbor at the top of the hill. Kid's name is Christopher.

B-meet race (Millbrae Street Scramble) 3:05:00 [3] * 14.0 mi (13:13 / mi) +400m 12:08 / mi
spiked:18/21c slept:7.0 weight:200lbs

Nice cool day, 50F, overcast, occasional drizzle. Perfect weather for the scramble. Terry and Eric did a great job. I had no idea Millbrae is actually a nice little town. 23000 people or so. In retrospect, my route choice had one major flaw - one control way out of the way - should have left it out (worth 40 points) and would have had time to get 120 more points and avoid a time penalty. The USGS map scale led me to be too ambitious - next time I will know better. However, the overall strategy was good, with lots of bailout options near the end, which I did use. I got hosed by one clue near the end - had to read a long thing to find a subtlety- took extra three minutes of goofing around, and also couldn't find the finish (too tired I guess). About 25 minutes of mistakes and oopses (like missing a mapped road that had been re-routed, which caused a 5 minute problem). Managed second place, but maybe there were only two in my age group...

First try on an eliptic. Does have less impact although knee twinges suggest otherwise.

Ski (Sugar Bowl) 2:20:00 [2]
slept:4.0 weight:200lbs

52 degrees. Icy from overnight freeze. Twinges in right knee. Fell once. Discussed Olympics coverage with various people (like Chernin). Consensus is that in 1 hour of coverage, there will be about 25 minutes of adverts, 15 minutes of announcers/human interest, 15 minutes of wussy skating, and 5 minutes of Olympics. Of the 5 minutes, 4 minutes are for US team, and 1 minute for the rest of the world. Not worth watching 60 minutes to see 5. Amazing that the networks can't figure out how sucky they are, even when the ratings tell them unequivocally.

Ski (Squaw Valley) 5:00:00 [2]
slept:2.0 weight:200lbs

Troop 241 ski trip with Malcolm. He's really pretty good on his board. Jumps the big jumps, goes fast. Lots of fun with the scouts. Last night sleep was elusive - i had the top bunk in the top room of the cabin, and hot air went up. It was sauna-like in bed - probably 90 degrees! I ski-ed mainly with Tom Mossinger. Went down a lot of blue, and two black. Fell twice.

Trail (Briones PO course) 50:00 [3] 4.6 km (10:52 / km) +130m 9:31 / km
weight:195lbs

Ran Malcolm's Briones permananent O' course with him. Beautiful weather 60F sunny. The course has been vandalized again. Two posts that were taken before have been taken again. The 34 (KM) post is nearby, so will re-place it. But the 46 (MS) post is completely missing. Last time they were removed, they had been tossed in a nearby reentrant, but not this time. Mucho erosion all over Briones from the heavy rains. Malcolm postulates that cows are harmful for erosion. Briones used to have cows, then they got rid of them for some reason (maybe erosion?), but star thistles started sprouting everywhere so now the cows are back.

Worked all night again. Presentation for Mo on Commercialization. It's frustrating to try to read the mind of the guy you're making a presentation for. Especially via a third party. Anyway, missed Kelsey's soccer game as a result - fell asleep at 2 pm for a bit. Why is it that if you miss a night of sleep, you feel worst the day after, having had a night's sleep?
