Adventure Race 11:37:00 [3] 54.3 mi (12:50 / mi) +4057ft 11:59 / mi

Cradle of Liberty with Joe and Jeff. Brought all bike and paddle gear to the start and received maps on the clock. Had to plot 3 CPs for the prologue. They were eyeballed because we couldn't find the plotter, so this was a bit sloppy, and we put in for the paddle in 4th. Nice punchy paddle down the Lehigh to Bethlehem.

For the rest of the race, you could collect CPs via foot/bike/swim. It made for a very bike-heavy course with lots of hike a bike on rocky trails and and plenty of bike whacking. Joe had one heck of a nav day and put together a super efficient route on the fly. Picked up all the points on the first section via bike and then headed through S1 to the islands. We swam to them then hopped from island to island to get them all, running back to our bikes and back out S1. Here, we learned we had made up the deficit and were in the lead.

We dropped bikes and headed in for a few W CPs. The dangerous W3(confluence) was a non-factor for us as we ran right into it after approaching from the west and heading back east. We saw Rootstock coming into this section as we were leaving. This was the last time we saw any lead teams until the end of the race. Next up, a heinous bike whack from W4-W6 which sucked but got the job done.

We rode through town towards South Mountain Park. Stopped for a bike fix for Joe's cable which involved a Sharpie cap and duct tape. We also left our clue sheet at a pee break and had to backtrack to get it. After South Mountain was the Hide and Seek section, which was why we needed the clue sheet. No plotted CPs, just bearing and distance from the previous CP in the section. Cool concept even though the points weren't accurate at all.

We felt we had plenty of time (2.5hrs) for the final section of R points, but the guys were getting pretty crampy, and it wasn't going to be fun. We had almost no water btwn us and nowhere to get any until the very end. These were the most technical trails we had been on all day, and there was more pushing than riding, esp on the E side of this course. Joe continued his methodical clip of CPs, and we came in with over 20min to spare. Only team to clear the course. It's been awhile since the 3 of have raced together, and it's good to be back. Derrick and Brian put on a course right in our wheelhouse with lots of decisions, and we loved it.
