Orienteering 1:20:00 [1]

Took my son out on the Orange course at Winnewanna to show him a bit more. It was so cold, wet and snowy! BIG props to Jess and Karl for holding the meet! Felt good to stretch my legs and bump around a bit.

Indiana Conquer the Crossroads Rogaine!

Great time with Michigan Scott and Indiana Scott. Hadn't heard about this Rogaine until recently. Definitely worth the trip. Michigan Scott is Scott Eveningred and Indiana Scott is Scott Forthofer (used to adventure race back in the day as they say). I was looking for a race to try my hand at rogaining one more time! I was lead nav, and everyone had maps which made it super fun. The cliff notes version is that I used the strategy of pulling out the highest points, determining the best attack points on those, and drawing in the next highest points along the way-which got us 2nd division and 6th(?) overall. We dropped several 20s, missed a couple of high points in the NW corner. I did the overall nav, and planning from point to point and we all got in on the fun w/in 500m of the flag. Used my screenless logger, lost about half hour of track.

Started counter clockwise to the easier points and the first couple overshooting was a bit of a problem, but it was soon corrected. Also, there were trails EVERYWHERE. One trail was a new gravel E/W route that challenged me seeing the top of the reentrant, so judging the shape was a little rough, but we decided to take an old logging road and saw better formations after about a K. The woods were beautiful, and hit briars a few times which slowed things a bit. At one point hit a spur that was the wrong one after climbing and realizing it was pulling us in the wrong direction. Also found that the creek beds were great travel, at least for me, I had waterproof socks on! Spurs were definitely better than reentrants. At one point we started hearing engines and the Scotts were speculating all over the place what they were. Motorbikes? Wood chippers? 4 wheelers? Well, we found it...and it went right through my planned route! http://www.ixcr.com/joomla2013/ We adjusted.

We got through the original plan with about 3ish hours to spare. Our attacks to this point were big, and thought if we could thread the needle a smidge, could pull out some more. I couldn't believe how well we did doing that. I was so happy. I kept pulling to the conservative, but the guys kept saying we could do it, and we did!

Those guys could move--they are both so tall! Kept me on my toes. And, we had a lot of fun. Such a great race. I felt great during the race. I ate a smidge more the couple of days leading up to it, and made sure that I kept up with ecaps (actually ran out, had about 6 salt stick caps during the race) I went through 3L of electrolyte water, 2 8 oz Gatorades, 3 GU, a bag of energy beans, pomegranate and dark choc bites, couple of larabars, jerky, and a couple of cliff bars. We got 1364 (?) points, the course was 1600ish, and the first and second place teams did it in 10/11 hours respectively. We all felt awesome about how it went.

Talked to the organizer about helping with the POCAR kids, he paused--smirked, and then he said he's busy. :)
