Event: The FIG XIV

5 AM

Adventure Race 11:30:04 [3] 41.74 mi (16:32 / mi) +2642m 13:49 / mi

Teamed up with ccmarie, byrnedfish and Andy Brown for this one. We had started talking about doing a race together, perhaps an expedition race, but thought we should try getting together for a race before then, and then the Fig!

We had read some race reports and talked to people, and went in with the idea of trying to clear the course. Well, the best laid plans....

Syd was the nav, Kevin backed her up and held bearings, I relished in my role as "eat! drink! pace count!" and Andy did great as a backup all around and spotter/runner.

There was a prologue of having to get 10 points on a short course. In the dark with lots of dampness, but we got through it and it seemed we were in the front pack going out onto the full course. Once on the full course, we moved pretty smoothly except for a confusing spur system, but got it sorted it out and headed for the rest of the points and down to the bikes. We covered about 13 miles in 3.5 hours.

Then a quick TA onto the bike. We had heard that there were ATV trails, but had no idea what was in store for us, and truthfully was suspicious of the 25k projection. We took a road to the system, and rode down the gravel/dirt 2 tracks and got to our first puddle that swallowed a CRV that a truck was trying to pull out. While getting the point (#9) I chatted up the people involved to keep a clear space for us to get through. They did that, and then we were off again.

The trail disappeared, a creek appeared. We tried to find the trails, with no luck, so biked the creek for quite a distance. Then ATV, boulders, mud, Huge mud puddles, good grief it was crazy. So much hike a bike, and falls, and getting on and off. Never witnessed anything like it. Andy was able to bike more of it than the rest of us. We got out to 17 and realized that we were in a bit of a pickle and needed to rethink our plan. Headed to the next couple of points and realized we were lost and quite possibly off the map. So, we trended east, found some other teams and got back on track. That bike was rough. After a few points we called it and decided to head to TA 2, get one point, and then bike to the paddle and the last O.

The paddle was SO COOL. An underground quarry with headlamps! Did that in about 20 minutes then headed to the last O. There were trails identified on the map, but, that was a bit of a stretch. At this point, we were just having fun, moving at a bit of a pace but not pushing it. We wanted to get 3 points, but with the overgrowth weren't sure if a 3rd was possible so we just let it be and headed back.

Loved the teamwork in this race. We can dial in a few things for sure, but for a first time out with a bike that was tough, we felt like we would be happy with mid-pack. Landed in the top third.
