Syd and I teamed up for the Fragile Flowers team to do both parts of the Frigid Rogaine. What a blast.

We (Syd, byrnedfish and I) left Ann Arbor at o-dark-thirty and got to Brown County at 9a, which gave us tons of time to get ourselves together for the start of Race 1. Syd was the nav. I seemed to have started a bit less nervous than normal, which was good. Six degrees (F) at the start. Brr.

We did a CCW loop of the controls, and Syd was nailing them one right after the other. We came across a lot of unmapped trails and had the opportunity to move a bit faster than bushwhacking. The terrain was hilly, but not bad. I think the coolest part of the race was standing on a ridge en route to a bonus point and trying to decided if we should go around to be sure that we attacked the correct reentrant, or to chance crossing the deep reentrant to the other ridge line. Then, I saw the flag in the distance. Woo hoo! That was the best.

We did take a few pictures. And at the last control, Drake White approached while Syd was taking a pic and we said "let's get outta here!" Practically sprinted to the end. Drake kept trying to catch us by cutting through the woods or sliding down a hill, but he couldn't.

3rd place team, 4th overall. Clothing worked out OK, NF hat, buff, merino glove liners, lobster gloves, silk shirt, polypro shirt, MH vest, REI shell, silk base layer bottoms, 4ucycling pants, 2 pair merino socks and speedcrosses. Wore small trail running pack under shell.

Frigid Rogaine, part 2, night!

We got back from the previous Rogaine and once I ate and drank, completely changed my clothes. We ended the last race at about 14 degrees, and the next one would start at the same or lower temps.

Maybe it was me, but seemed like a lot of people left.

We got our maps for this round, it was just 16 controls and no bonus controls. And, decided to go for the controls that were very up down and generally harder to get to, and higher density so if we had to bail, we covered perhaps more ground. We met up with byrnedfish a couple of hours in and traversed together the rest of the way. My feet really started to go numb, and I don't think because of the cold, I think it was my sock/shoe setup. But if I ran, the numbness was less so.

Anyway, Syd did a great job navigating, AGAIN, and we cleared the course, AGAIN. Yawn. :) JK, it was a lot of fun, and I'm always looking for ways to help and keep us moving. We have started talking about how to best split roles for a 4 person team. And, another sprint to the finish.

2nd place team, 5th OA for night and 3rd OA for the whole thing. Great stuff!
