An actual adventure race! Michigan AR 12 hour edition with BJ Foster. 1st Div and 7th OA. More later!

Here is the "more later."

A friend of mine, BJ Foster, has been interested in doing a longer race. So, we decided to team up for this race. We got together a few times to train for the paddle (involved bikes in the boat) and just some riding and stuff to spend time together and go over gear and logistics.

We decided ahead of time that I would do the bike and paddle nav and BJ would to the land nav. HA. I so got the easier part!

The first CP was up the hill an d according to the RD, CP2 was at the end of the 2 track on the single track. That went badly for a lot of us. We lost ~25min on that! We headed out to the ride to the paddle and passed a couple of teams, we thought we would be in 15th at best. When we rolled in, we were in 6th and once on the water 5th.

Paddled with the bikes to TA2 , dropped them quickly, and then went on our way to pick up the CPS on the river in good order. Then returned to the TA. Headed out on foot. Bobbled 10 and 14. Back to TA. As I was arranging the maps, I gave one to BJ to lead us out of the TA and then I wouldn't have to flip maps. I did some interesting arranging just to not flip maps!

Got to the 2nd O section and the first point didn't go so well, and the second we went a bit astray. I got on the map also at this point and after we had pretty smooth sailed from an O standpoint. BJ thinks with the mistakes on CPs 2, 10, 14, 20 and 18 that we lost an hour, maybe more.

At the 3rd O section we had downpours but that was fine! Cooled us right down for a good while. But by the time we got through TA 4 and then 5, warmed right back up.

We had a decision to make on the bike. About 2m of road riding vs. 1.3 m of single track. We thought the downpours would have made the single track a mess. Turns out it didn't. Bad gamble.

Single track to the finish uneventful except I forgot how hard it is to ride and see with the map board. Kept missing my lines.

Great day! Nice to see people we haven't seen in a while.

I can’t believe I actually have a race this weekend that isn’t cancelled. I don’t know what to do with myself.

Hot and humid and after a couple of miles kind of rough on my pooch. Several walk breaks and jump in nearby water breaks. Pledging to unearth my chest HR strap. HR data wonky again.
