SUPER BOWL CHAMPIONS!!!!!
10 AM

Strength 27:00 [3]

12 PM

Running tempo 1:04:01 [3] 8.0 mi (8:00 / mi) +50m 7:51 / mi

Fairly easy pre-Super Bowl run along the railroad grade, although it ended up being longer and a bit more strenuous than I planned. I am fairly sore after the race yesterday, which is unusual. It's probably because I forgot to stretch afterward.

Orienteering race 44:05 [5] *** 4.8 km (9:11 / km) +180m 7:44 / km

WIOL 7, Fire Mountain. Really nice course with some tricky legs (1-2, 4-5, 6-7, 10-11) and a minimum of trail and road action. Actually, it was interesting that the main three legs of trail running were all longish, gradual uphills that constituted a good deal of the course's total climb - which makes sense now that I look at it, because I felt like I was moving slower than I normally should be moving on a trail.

I was not in a good frame of mind when I finished, because I made several errors, especially one really dumb mistake 11-12 when I tried (and failed) to go through some dark green for no apparent reason other than navigational neglect. However, it looks like I still slid into second, ~4 min. behind Eric.

I count it as a good sign that I ended up with a relatively solid result even after a race I was unhappy with, and did not feel physically strong during.

Easy library trip. I am doing a cycling week to give my long-suffering knees a break. In related news, my knees feel great!

Note

It's looking like an interesting race for the fifth and final Winter Series men's "money" spot between Oyvind Naess (344), Matt Baughman (344), Matt Hayes (267), Jon Campbell (264), and Alex Frank (255). ON has the current edge on MB based on a higher top score as well as a lower low score, and thus has the advantage of currently being in the lead and winning should the status quo be maintained, with greater opportunity for an improved total in hand.

All three of the others still must tally a fourth score. However, without improvement from ON or MB, MH or JC would move into fifth with 78 and 81, respectively - numbers which neither has finished below this season. AF is a bit more of a long shot, and would likely need to finish second (which, by the by, he has done this season) or third, while seeing other results break his way.

Time to break out the predictilator machine: We'll give Jon the nod here, based on his strong showing at Fire Mountain last year (as well as the fact that he's preregistered), and expect him to slot into fifth for the season. In fact, with a 92 or better on Saturday, he could very conceivably move into fourth.

Predicted final standings:

Men:
1. Eric Bone
2. Will Enger
3. Nikolay Nachev
4. Jeremiah Reiner
5. Jon Campbell

Women:
1. Heather Whitney
2. Rebecca Jensen
3. Tori Campbell
4. Gina Nuss
5. Marissa Roecks

The Campbells will be fighting over who gets the brand-new pair of $100 kicks, while the rest of us get to rock out with our new friend Ulysses. Whatever goes down, prizes make everything better, much like chocolate milk.

We'll see how clairvoyant my predictionin' is - and thanks to Rebecca for making the prizes happen!
