Orienteering race 17:28 [5] ** 3.0 km (5:49 / km) +65m 5:15 / km
23c

Team Trials Sprint. I needed to be fast and clean - I did have one of the better speed scores, according to AP, but I was unfortunately not clean. I had one ~30s mistake on 14, and a ~15s bobble on 18. A navigationally fantastic run would have put me around 16:40. I'm happy that I demonstrated that potential to myself, but disappointed I was unable to realize it here.

This race also resulted in a surprisingly distant third place for me in the all-important Sprint Series of the Wills (sponsorship opportunities available). Stay tuned for the overall rankings, which will be published soon and will include Sprint Camp and Team Trials.

Ideas for the name of the Sprint Series of the Wills are now officially being entertained. The worst pun anyone can think of will be declared the winner.

Orienteering race 15:50 [5] ** 2.6 km (6:05 / km) +35m 5:42 / km

Team Trials Sprint Relay. Disastrous beginning - I took off immediately and ran directly off the map, to the building adjacent to the correct one. Classic case of starting too fast and too recklessly. That ~45s mistake took me out of the train on the first loop, and I had to run the entire course solo. It also destroyed my confidence and mental focus, and I never recovered. A completely forgettable race for me.

Orienteering race 1:04:46 [5] **** 5.44 km (11:54 / km) +395m 8:44 / km

Team Trials middle. Super technical and physical first half of the course, relatively easy second half. I had lots of problems early on (1, 2, 3, 5) and played catch-up for the rest of the race. Many people were unhappy with the length - I, however, was thankful for the extra distance, being that I could finally use some speed on the last seven or eight legs. Happy with the result overall, particularly the fact that I had four top splits (10, 18, 20, F).

This is essentially my first time racing competitively at a major (inter)national event since JWOC in 2005, and my first time running against many of the top East Coast guys, so I came in with very ambiguous relative expectations, i.e. stay "in the mix" as much as possible with the other Senior Team members. In my case, this will of course be most doable in the middle and the sprints.
