Watched most of the New York Marathon this morning - truly incredible athletes with dedication and motivation I can't even fathom. Kapsing's final sprint was Bolt-esque in the way he looked at Desisa next to him a couple times, then just went. It almost looked like he even said something to him - perhaps the Kenyan version of "later bro."

Also touching to see tears of disappointment running down Kara Goucher's face during her post-race interview, but also a smile because her son in her arms says "Don't cry, mommy!"

Winner!

Managed to come out on top of a loaded field including usual suspects Eric, Peteris, and Nikolay, plus Ali Crocker up with the Portland ladies and Jourdan Harvey, a Kiwi who World of O tells me had good showings at a couple JWOCs and beat most of the North Americans at WUOC this year. Patrick and I agreed this may have been the strongest field in Winter Series history, with seven athletes who have competed at one or more of the various WOCs.

Also happened today: the dad of one of our most promising juniors who is weighing the commitment between soccer and orienteering said that when his son sees us in our Team USA jackets it makes him want to orienteer. So yeah, that's a pretty cool thing to hear.

Pushing hard but not all out. Basically just trying to stay under 6:00. Successful test run/baseline establishment.

New goal: Win WIOL this year. Over the past three seasons I've finished 4th, T3rd, and 2nd. Ergo, this is my year! Rawr.

It has been ten years since anyone other than Eric or Nikolay has won the Winter Series.

Big news - well, news - I have signed up for a 5k. This is notable because I have not raced a 5k in literally a decade, so we shall see how older and fatter but stronger and motivated Will stacks up against bouncy, beanpole-thin yet wildly apathetic Will. Stay tuned.
