Orienteering race 15:38 [4] ** 2.65 km (5:54 / km) +63m 5:16 / km
20c

Stage One, The Black Point, Golden Gate NRA.

A generally decent race, but with ~30s total lost on 14 and 17, the former due to pure navigational laziness and the latter due to failure to read ahead and locate the most favorable route choice in a tricky area. I felt okay physically - should have gone for an easy shakeout run yesterday evening though. On to the tourney!

Note

Today, in my garage, I discovered a booklet entitled "O-DOKU." I have never seen this booklet before.

The inside cover:

"Congratulations! You are now the proud owner of the first ever O-doku book to be published.

O-doku's history started in august [sic] 2005. During the World Championships in Japan members of the Danish national team changed the numbers of a sudoku to control description symbols and the first O-doku was born. Since then others have done the same and O-doku's have appeared in several magazines and on the internet."

The back cover:

"WARNING!

This book contains time-consuming and addictive material. There will be no turning back - once started you will be hooked, but it is fun to solve O-doku! Some might call you a nerd as you work through this book, but remember - you are just an enthusiast."

Well, then.

Another one for the good guys! 0:17 ahead of our new Kiwi friend, 0:48 ahead of Brother Eric. Jourdan had the best speed today and got me on most of the pure running legs, but I had better route choices than the other guys on 4 and 10, which allowed me to hold onto my dwindling lead through the finish.

After the run I introduced myself to Jourdan and talked with him a bit. A job at Microsoft brings him to Seattle, but our recent out-of-character week of sub-zero temperatures has given him the hilarious idea that it gets cold here in the wintertime.

It's exciting to have another formidable foe on the local scene! Perhaps we can convince him to join Cascade and unleash hell at the next Relay Champs...

Also, congrats to Gina on her first career WIOL victory. My prediction is looking good!
