Note

Rolled down to Lincoln Tree Farm for some 2016 National Orienteering Championship Invitational (Day 1) course planning action. While I must restrain myself somewhat for the Navy courses, Long Advanced runners will be shown no mercy.

-- -- -- --

In the course of discharging my manful duties, it did so happen that I once neared the summit of a particular crest, and thusly expected, once I had done with the requisite effort, to be regaled with a dramatic prospect of that noble verdure typical to these countrysides - a scene which must always be pleasing to the eye of the solitary traveler. Yet - Lo and Wonderment! Upon gaining my anticipated vista, what shadow did darken my hardy countenance but a scene of most singular and unsurpassed horror!

"Many of these trees were my friends," said I. "Creatures I had known from nut or acorn." Stricken by the grim aspect before me, I sunk to the Earth, and could effect naught but rueful exclamations of that which I now knew ne'er would be.

Ah, controls 108 and 123!

Ah, humanity!

Note

Anyone who's read my log for more than about two days knows that most of what I say is nonsense, but all joking aside, not that long ago I was embarrassed to tell people that my goal was to make the National Team, because it seemed so far-fetched. It continues to be a true honor.

Cycling 56:41 [3] 14.13 mi (15.0 mph) +295m

New spinoff of HIIT = HOT ("Hung Over Training"). Biked it over to Soaring Eagle in Sammamish, just to see what it's all about (had never been there before). The woods look relatively runnable from what I could see, but I presume going off-trail is forbidden. Lovely partial sunny day out.
2 PM

Cycling (mountain bike) 9:13 [2] 1.17 mi (7.6 mph) +15m

3 PM

Cycling 1:06:59 [3] 16.78 mi (15.0 mph) +305m

The way home was arduous, but I successfully sweated away my hangover and replaced it with pain, which was the goal.

Last night, randomly ran into Arne Skog, an orienteer from the land before time (AKA the 80s), for the first time in many years. I have often heard tales of a long-ago camping/orienteering trip to Canada involving my dad, three-year-old me, and Arne.
