Note

A somewhat underwhelming turnout at Robinswood Park this evening, but we did have a celebrity attendee.

Finally have a chance to write a little about Sage Stomp. The Long was a pretty decent run; my only real mistake was 90s at 13. I also lost 30s at 1 due to the flag being mildly mishung (at the wrong corner of the open area) and took suboptimal routes on the long legs 2-3 and 5-6. On 3 I meant to head basically straight but ended up veering off right and had to correct past the pond by the fence, while on 6 I went right around the big hill when left appeared to have been quicker. Though I was displeased to see the Bonesaw 2min behind me in the start list, I did not see him until my error at 13. We were then together until halfway to 17, when we diverged and he took a better route and thus finished ~40s ahead. I have progressed to the point where I can run with the Bonesaw for 65-70min, but after that my lack of distance training and his superior endurance become apparent.

Cascade podium sweep, sorry Canadians :)

This was a weird sprint in that the compass was of strong importance in the forest sections. Lost some 30s at 5 when I arrived one green thicket south of the correct one, but other than that was mostly clean, if not particularly fast. I did feel like my flow was working really well in the white forest section 6-14. Managed to come first due to everyone else making more mistakes than me.

Here be video. For the middle they set up a sort of reverse chase, with start times being determined by the sprint finish, but winner being last instead of first - hence the J starts 30s ahead of me at the beginning of the video - which foretold the entertaining possibility of everyone running around in the forest together having zany adventures. Here's a summary of my encounters:

-- With J from 3 to 5, after which he confused me by running off in some crazy direction and we parted;
-- With the Bonesaw (who, naturally, had missed his start time and thus started last) from 8 till I blew up at 10;
-- With J again from halfway to 13 till losing him again after 15;
-- Found Nate coming into 17 just behind me from a strange direction;
-- Found Adam coming into 19 just ahead of me from a strange direction, and again from between 20 and 21 till the finish.

Unfortunately the short start window turned it into more of a "worry about what other people doing" race rather than a "try to orienteer independently and well" race, but the former are always fun too.
